Thirteen men’s soccer student-athletes named Capital One Academic All-District

Nov 1, 2013

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - In true Pac-12 fashion, a record-setting 13 men’s soccer student-athletes from the Conference were selected as Capital One Academic All-District first team honorees, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The 13 selections marks the most all-district members for the Pac-12 all-time.

Leading the charge was STANFORD, which had four student-athletes on the list: senior goalkeeper Drew Hutchins, senior defender Ty Conklin, senior midfielder JJ Koval and junior forward Eric Verso. All four players have played in all 13 games for the Cardinal so far this year, and hold an average cumulative GPA of 3.47. It marks the first Academic All-District honor for all four teammates.

UCLA placed three student-athletes on the first team, including senior defender Joe Sofia and senior forward Reed Williams, both of whom were named to the All-District team last year. Joining them is sophomore midfielder Grady Howe, who is one of only two sophomores on the District 8 first team. Sofia has started 13 games in 14 appearances for the Bruins, while Williams and Howe have served key reserve roles, seeing action in all 15 games for the Bruins.

CALIFORNIA and OREGON STATE both had two student-athletes apiece on the all-district roster. The Bears’ junior midfielders Seth Casiple and Omid Jalali took home the first Academic All-District honors for California since the 2009 season. Oregon State’s senior defender Josh Smith and senior forward Daniel Van Vleet represented the Beavers, marking the third-straight year that OSU has had an Academic All-district honoree.

WASHINGTON and SAN DIEGO STATE rounded out the Pac-12 members, with senior defender Taylor Peay being the lone Husky on the list and senior midfielder Kody Duff representing the Aztecs. It marked Duff’s second-consecutive season with an Academic All-District honor and Peay’s first.

The Capital One Academic All-District Teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected early next month. Voting for the teams is done by current CoSIDA members.
