Roundup: UCLA and USC are national champions in tennis

May 22, 2014

UCLA

The Pac-12 has now won nine NCAA team championships this academic year and 468 all-time after what went down in Georgia Tuesday. First, UCLA won the NCAA women’s tennis title by outlasting North Carolina 4-3 in a match that lasted more than four hours. As a school, UCLA has now won 111 NCAA team national championships, more than any other school.

USC

Then later that evening, USC won the NCAA men’s tennis title by defeating Oklahoma 4-2. It is the 21st men’s tennis championship for the Trojans and 100th overall for the school.

Oregon

Shaun Chase hit two home runs and Oregon baseball snapped its Civil War losing streak to No. 1 Oregon State, beating the Beavers 6-2.

Washington

The NCAA women’s golf championships began Tuesday, and Washington is tied for eighth after one round. The Dawgs shot 19-over as a team in super windy conditions (try 30 MPH winds).

California

Here’s some transfer news in men’s basketball: Former Cal guard Ricky Kreklow is going to Creighton. He should be able to play immediately, as he is on track to graduate from Cal.

Oregon State

And this one is a couple of days old, but former Oregon State guard Hallice Cooke is transferring to Iowa State, leading Jeff Eisenberg to write that Cooke becomes Iowa State’s latest impact transfer.

Pac-12

The Pac-12 presidents sent a letter to the presidents of the other major conferences asking the other leagues to back the proposed NCAA reforms.

Colorado

Colorado’s student-athletes earned the Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award for their efforts in helping the Boulder community recover from the major flooding in September.

Arizona

Marcus Thompson II of the Bay Area News Group writes that new Golden State head coach Steve Kerr brings harmony to the Warriors’ front office. Kerr was formally introduced as the new coach at a press conference Tuesday.

Washington State

You can ask Mike Leach anything on Wednesday, as the Wazzu head coach is hosting an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit.com (warning- it’s Reddit, so some things might not be so squeaky clean).

Utah

Yup, you could say that expectations are high for the 2014-15 Runnin’ Utes. It’s feelin’ like tournament time in Salt Lake City.

Arizona State

This is pretty cool – an Arizona State softball superfan got up close with the Sun Devils. The fan, autistic high school student Jose Ruelas, got a chance to hang out at a practice with ASU.

Stanford

Here's an article from former Stanford baseball pitcher Matt Manship ('06) on what Stanford meant to him. He is now a lieutenant in the armed forces.
