May 28, 2014
Oregon State Athletics
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — In a vote by the Conference coaches, OREGON STATE junior outfielder Michael Conforto has been named the Pac-12 Player of the Year for the second-consecutive year, while the Beavers’ junior left-hander Jace Fry has earned Pitcher of the Year honors. WASHINGTON junior shortstop Erik Forgione has been tabbed the Defensive Player of the Year, STANFORD right-hander Cal Quantrill has been named Freshman of the Year and Washington’s Lindsay Meggs has garnered Coach of the Year laurels, as the Conference office announced the baseball all-conference selections Wednesday.

Pac-12 Player of the Year, Individual Batting Champion – Michael Conforto, OREGON STATE
Conforto is Oregon State’s 12th Conference Player of the Year and is the first to win the award in back-to-back years since Arizona State’s Brett Wallace won it in 2007 and 2008. It is also just the fourth time in Pac-12 history the same player has earned the award in consecutive years. The Woodinville, Wash., native boasts a .364 batting average and a .578 slugging percentage, both of which lead his team and are best in the Pac-12. He owns a league-high .518 on-base percentage, while his 55 runs batted in are second on both his team and in the Conference. The outfielder has scored 50 runs to lead the league while his 7 home runs rank in the top 10.  A 2013 All-American and 2014 preseason All-American, Conforto’s 50 walks this season are a league-best and an Oregon State program record. With the .364 batting average, Conforto earns the 2014 regular season individual batting championship. He was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year in 2012.

Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year – Jace Fry, OREGON STATE
Fry is the first-ever Beaver to win Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year since the award was introduced in 1991. The Beaverton, Ore.. native owns a 1.43 ERA, which is third in the Pac-12 and 15th in the country. He is 11-1 in 15 appearances with the 11 victories ranking tied for ninth in NCAA Division I Baseball. He boasts a .192 opposing batting average and has notched 94 strikeouts, good for second and third in the Conference, respectively. His 113.2 innings pitched leads OSU and is tied for first in the Conference, while his four complete games is a league second-best. The junior starting pitcher played a huge role in the Beavers’ second-consecutive Pac-12 Championship and in earning the No. 1 overall national seed in the upcoming 2014 NCAA Baseball Championship. Fry is also in contention for the Diamond Sports Pitcher of the Year Award.

Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year – Erik Forgione, WASHINGTON
Forgione, who hails from Chehalis, Wash., is the first Husky to receive the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honor. The junior shortstop, who has started 51 of 55 games for the UW, is fielding at a .972 clip and has committed just eight errors in 284 chances. He has registered a team-leading 194 assists, ranking him first in the Conference in that category, while he has fielded 42 double plays—second on both his team and in the Pac-12. Forgione was named to the latest Brooks Wallace midseason watch list.

Pac-12 Freshman of the Year – Cal Quantrill, STANFORD
Quantrill is the third Cardinal to garner Freshman of the Year laurels, joining Kenny Diekroeger and Brian Ragira, who earned the honors in consecutive years in 2010 and 2011. The righty from Port Hope, Ontario, owns a 2.92 ERA and .224 opposing batting average that both rank in the top-11 in the league. He tossed one complete-game shutout this season while striking out 84 in 92.1 innings of work. He was the first freshman pitcher to start on opening day for the Cardinal since Mike Mussina in 1988.

Pac-12 Coach of the Year — Lindsay Meggs, WASHINGTON
This is the first Pac-12  Coach of the Year accolade for Meggs and the first for Washington since Ken Knutson earned the honors in 1998—the last year of the north and south divisions in the Conference. Picked to finish 10 out of 11 teams in the Conference, the Huskies earned a second-place finish in the league standings—their highest since finishing in the same spot in 2004. Meggs, who is in his fifth year at Washington, has helped the Huskies return to the postseason for the first time in 10 years. This season, Washington garnered its highest rankings in program history in Baseball America and they spent most of the second-half of the season ranked in the top 10. The Huskies are making their ninth postseason appearance overall and the first under Meggs.  In 2009, Meggs was named the Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year while at Indiana State and was a seven-time conference coach of the year during his stint at Division II Chico State.
