NCAA regionals: Cal, UCLA extend regionals; four teams exit postseason

UCLA

Two up, two down. That's how Sunday went for the Bruins, who posted a 9-1 win over CSU Bakersfield in a Sunday afternoon elimination game before beating Maryland later that  night, 4-2. UCLA showed no mercy on offense in the first contest of the day -- namely Ty Moore, who crushed a three-run home run in the seventh to give the Bruins a 5-0 lead. The following inning, small ball from Darrell Miller Jr., Christoph Bono, Trent Chatterton and Luke Persico added three more runs for the BruCru. The nightcap between UCLA and Maryland was more contained, save for a Ty Moore score after a steal and a bad throw by the Terps. The teams face off once more Monday night for the regional championship.

California

The Golden Bears fell to Texas A&M 4-3 in 12 innings, but they get a rematch on Monday. Cal took an early lead in the bottom of the first on singles from Aaron Knapp and Devin Pearson and a sacrifice fly from Lucas Erceg. The Aggies tied it up in the fourth on a solo home run from Ryne Birk, and they took the lead in the top of the seventh Jonathan Moroney doubled and Michael Barash singled him home. Texas A&M wouldn't go down without a fight, tying the game in the top of the ninth after Logan Nottebrok singled and Ronnie Gideon doubled him home. With two outs in the top of the 12th, Mitchell Nau singled. He moved to second on an error from Cal shortstop Preston Grand Pre and scored on a single from Nick Banks. The Bears and the Aggies meet again Monday at 4:30 p.m. PT to see who takes the regional.

Oregon

Oregon baseball gave it their all in extras, but ultimately fell to Iowa 2-1 in 11 innings to be eliminated from the NCAA tournament Sunday afternoon. The Ducks got on the board first in the bottom of the third when Mark Karaviotis singled and stole second. He advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a single from Austin Grebeck. The Hawkeyes tied it up in the sixth off of Oregon starter Josh Graham. Eric Toole led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, advanced to third in a wild pitch and ended up scoring on another wild pitch.

The Ducks had a chance to end it in the ninth when they loaded the bases with no outs. But Iowa pitcher Nick Hibbing got the strikeout and double play that he needed to send the game to extras. The Hawkeyes took the lead in the top of the 11th when Nick Roscetti reached on a fielder's choice and eventually scored on a single from Daniel Aaron Moriel. Oregon couldn't mount a rally in the bottom of the inning, going down 1-2-3. The Ducks finish the year with a 38-25 record.

Oregon State

The Beavers exited the postseason Sunday following losses to VCU (5-1) and Dallas Baptist (7-1). In the first game of the day, LHP Heath Dwyer provided a solid outing for the Rams with 6.1 innings pitched, three hits allowed and just one earned run to help put away the Beavs. In Oregon State's evening contest, Dallas Baptist scored the game's first four runs and kept OSU scoreless until the fifth. DBU added three more runs in the eighth inning to put away Oregon State for good, ending its season at 39-18-1 – just one win away from four consecutive 40-win season.

USC

USC is out of contention for the College World Series after a late-night loss on Sunday, but the Trojans did not fail to entertain in the process. They started the day in a back-and-forth battle with San Diego State in the afternoon – a 12-11 victory for USC – and debuted the below-pictured "rally chairs," which worked, apparently. But USC's luck ran out deep into the 1 a.m. hour on the West Coast: Troy gave up five runs to Virginia in the 11th inning of another back-and-forth contest, resulting in a 14-10 loss to Virginia. USC ends its season with a 39-21 record.

Arizona State

The Sun Devils' season came to an end on Sunday with a 7-4 loss to Pepperdine. The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Snow and a single from Jake Peavyhouse, but a pair of runs from Pepperdine in the fourth and fifth gave them the lead. The Waves saw back-to-back singles from Aaron Barnett and Brandon Caruso, and a double from Kolten Yamaguchi tied it at two before a two-run home run from Hutton Moyer gave them a 4-2 lead in the fifth. A Peevyhouse solo shot in the sixth and another Snow sac fly in the seventh tied the game at four. But a three-run bottom of the eighth from the Waves would sink Arizona State, which finishes its season at 35-23.
