MLB Draft complete with 53 players drafted

Jun 10, 2015

SAN FRANCISCO— Over three days, 53 Pac-12 players were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft with Arizona State having nine players selected and USC and UCLA having eight a piece. Twenty-four players were selected in the first 10 rounds. Twenty-nine players went on the final day of the Draft on Wednesday.

Seven players were selected by the Mariners, including early round selection RHP Andrew Moore (Oregon State), and top-five round picks, shortstop Drew Jackson (Stanford) and outfielder Braden Bishop (Washington). Six others were drafted by the Pirates, including first-round pick Kevin Newman (Arizona), second round pick Kevin Kramer (UCLA) and 12th round selection Ty Moore (UCLA). UCLA's James Kaprielian was the top Pac-12 pick, as the 16th overall selection on Monday to the Yankees.

Among the notable draftees on day three from the Pac-12, was Moore who led the Bruins with a .342 average and 51 RBIs and ARIZONA STATE outfielder Johnny Sewald, the Pac-12 leader in steals with 21 to go along with a .324 average. Sewald was a 14th round pick of the Astros.

Lefthanded starters with coincidentally eight wins apiece were also a popular selection in the teen-rounds with USC LHP Kyle Twomey and his 8-2 record and 2.88 ERA going to the Cubs in the 13th round; UCLA's Grant Watson going to the Giants in the 16th round and WASHINGTON STATE's Joe Pistorese and his 8-5 record and 2.41 ERA to the Mariners in the 17th round.

Later round selections included USC outfielder Bobby Stahel (20th round, Cubs), who batted a team-best .376, Stanford two-sport outfielder and safety Zach Hoffpauir (22nd round, Diamondbacks), WASHINGTON eight-game winner Tyler Davis (23rd round, Rangers) and ARIZONA STATE's leading hitter Trever Allen (25th round, Angels), who hit .357.
