2017 Pac-12 Swimming (W) & Diving (M/W) Championships: American records continue to fall on day three of Pac-12 swimming and men’s and women’s diving championships
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Two American records fell on day three of the Pac-12 women’s swimming and men’s and women’s diving championships. Stanford’s Katie Ledecky broke her second American record of the meet, stopping the clock in the 400 IM with a 3:57.68. Fellow Cardinal Ally Howe made history with a 49.49 in the 100 backstroke, breaking Natalie Coughlin’s standard set back in 2002.
Stanford’s Tarek Abdelghany and Simone Manuel, ASU’s Silja Kansakoski, and USC’s Louise Hansson each won individual events as the Cardinal extended its lead with 1,126 points to enter the final day of competition.
CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:
Men’s platform
Stanford took the top two spots in the men’s platform with Juniors Tarek Abdelghany (399.45) and Ted Miclau (398.50) placing first and second respectively. Arizona State’s Heikki Makikallio rounded out the top three with a 372.15
400 IM
• Stanford freshman Katie Ledecky touched first in a new American Record time of 3:57.68, breaking a seven year old Pac-12 Championship record in the process, previously held by fellow Cardinal Julia Smit since 2010
• Completing the Stanford sweep was 2016 Pac-12 Champion Ella Eastin, with a 4:00.96 and Allie Szekely with a 4:02.34
100 fly
• The morning started with a new Pac-12 Championship record of 50.38 by Stanford’s Janet Hu but it was USC’s Louise Hansson, 2016 Olympian for Sweden, touching first tonight in finals with a 50.39 for the second fastest time in the country and the Trojans’ fourth Conference winner in that event.
• Egyptian Olympian and California senior Farida Osman finished one one-hundredth behind with a 50.40 followed by Hu with a 50.59.
200 Free
• Stanford swept the podium for the second time tonight. In a dual between Olympic gold medalists, Simone Manuel claimed the top spot in a new Pac-12 Championship record time of 1:40.37
• Fresh off her American record time in the 400 IM, Katie Ledecky finished second with the second fastest time in the country this year, 1:40.50
• 2016 Olympian Lia Neal finished third with a 1:43.62
100 breaststroke
• Arizona State freshman Silja Kansakoski topped the podium with a 58.44, the fourth fastest time in the country. She became the first Sun Devil women's swimmer to win a Pac-12 title since 2012
• USC’s Riley Scott (58.92) and Kirsten Vose (59.58) rounded out the podium.
100 backstroke
• Ally Howe of Stanford broke Natalie Coughlin’s 15 year-old 100 backstroke American record, finishing with a 49.69 for the fastest time in the history of the event.
• Olympic silver medalist Kathleen Baker touched second with a 50.27
• UCLA’s Linnea Mack followed breaking her own school record with a 50.56 for third
Women’s 3 meter
• Maria Polyakova of UCLA captured the women’s 3-meter title over Stanford’s Kassidy Cook, 385.00 to 367.50. Fellow Bruin Annika Lenz took third with a 330.90.
400 medley relay
•The 200-medley championship winning squad of Ally Howe, Kim Williams, Janet Hu, and Simone Manuel reunited to win the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:26.74.
•The California team of Kathleen Baker, Marina Garcia Urzainqui, Noemie Thomas, and Farida Osman placed second with a 3:27.88. USC finished third with a 3:27.88
