OREGON STATE’S MADELINE GARDINER NAMED PAC-12 GYMNASTICS
SCHOLAR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Gardiner to be honored at Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships this Saturday at Stanford
STANFORD, Calif. – OREGON STATE’s Madeline Gardiner was named the Pac-12 Gymnastics Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Conference office announced Thursday. The award, which is presented in each of the 23 sports the Conference sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.
Gardiner is majoring in Exercise and Sport Science and currently holds a 3.79 cumulative GPA. She is a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic first team honoree and a two-time National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches / Women (NACGC/W) Scholastic All-American. Gardiner is also involved in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) on campus at Oregon State and is in charge of her team’s myriad community service efforts. Gardiner will spend next season as a student coach for Beaver gymnastics and will graduate in the spring of 2018. After graduation, Gardiner plans to go to medical school.
The Cambridge, Ontario native has excelled just as much on the competition floor as she has in the classroom, maintaining her high GPA while earning first team All-Pac-12 honors in the all-around in 2015 and 2016, and second team All-Pac-12 honors on beam in 2014. Last season, Gardiner claimed a share of the Pac-12 beam championship and was named to the NACGC/W Regular Season All-America Second Team on beam.
Before coming to Corvallis, Gardiner was the Canadian National Team’s alternate for 2012 Olympics in London and has since become one of the most decorated and celebrated Oregon State gymnasts of all time. Some of her other career milestones include earning All-America first team honors on beam in 2014 and 2015, as well as in the all-around in 2014. She also tied for third on the balance beam at NCAA championships in 2014 and 2015, and won the all-around at the Norman Regional in 2015.
Gardiner is competing in her final Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship this weekend at Stanford after helping the Beavers tie for second place in the conference championship meet last season. Session 1 of this year’s championship gets underway Saturday, Mar. 18 at 1:00 p.m. PT at Maples Pavilion on campus at Stanford. Gardiner’s third-seeded Beavers will compete against UCLA, UTAH and WASHINGTON in the second session of the championship, set to begin at 6:00 p.m. PT Saturday evening. Tickets for both sessions are still available at gostanford.com/pac12gymnastics and at the door at Maples Pavilion.
In order to be eligible for Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, student-athletes must be seniors (in athletics eligibility) on track to receive a degree, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher, participate in at least 50% of the scheduled contests in the sport, and have a minimum of one year in residence at the institution. Each Pac-12 institution may nominate one individual per sport, and the winners are selected by a committee of Pac-12 staff members at the conclusion of each sport’s regular season.
