2017 Pac-12 Women's Gymnastics: California's Charlie Owens incorporates family magic into floor routine

Mar 17, 2017

Gymnasts pick their floor routine music for several different reasons: to suit their personalities or to fit with their choreography.

But California senior Charlie Owens had a trick up her sleeve for her swan-song season.

Her parents, Buzz and Tammy, have supported their daughter and the Golden Bears by coming to every meet and even traveling with the team. Owens decided to incorporate her parents’ favorite song, Van Morrison’s Brown Eyed Girl into her floor routine.

“My sophomore year I wanted to do a tribute to my parents because I thought it would be a nice little gift to them,” the Alta Loma, Calif., native explained.

Owens debuted her routine at Cal’s home opener earlier this year at the Nor Cal Classic, where she scored a 9.8 and has since scored her season-high 9.825 three times this season.

“They were surprised that very first competition and there were a few tears,” Owens said.

“I think it’s a little more special because I use a little snippet as my senior tribute to them," Owens continued. "When we’re home my routine is positioned to face them right in front.”

Watch for the moment after Owens' second pass on floor, and her parents will be sure to be in the stands rooting for their daughter on Saturday.
