Cougars Improve Marks at Whitworth’s Sam Adams Classic

SPOKANE, Wash. -- A concentrated contingent of Washington State competitors tallied 13 wins and six lifetime-best marks Thursday and Friday at the 12th Whitworth University Sam Adams Classic meet in at the Pine Bowl/Boppell Track in Spokane.

Less than a week after Brock Eager (redshirt sophomore, Renton, Wash.) tossed a personal-record in the hammer that was sixth-best in WSU all-time records, Eager surpassed that mark with a throw of 225-feet 1 inch (68.68m) to win the men's hammer Thursday afternoon. His Sam Adams Classic mark moves him up to fourth-best in WSU all-time records in an event where the top 10 had been dormant for 18 years.

Eager led a first through fourth in the Cougars finish in the men's hammer. Wyatt Meyring took second place with a PR throw of 193-1 (58.86m), Travis Pickett was third with a toss of 190-10 (58.18m) and Amani Brown was fourth with his mark of 177-5 (54.08m).

In other events staged Thursday, Katie Wardsworth (redshirt junior, Spokane Valley) won the women's hammer with her throw of 179-5 (54.69m). Aoife Martin placed third with a PR throw of 167-7 (51.07m).

Kelsey Kehl (freshman, Baldwin City, Kan.) won the women's javelin with a throw of 136-1 (41.47m) with Kristen McDonnell runner-up with a mark of 126-7 (38.58m).

Cougar men capturing wins Friday included Peyton Fredrickson in the high jump (2.00m/6-6 3/4), Tucker Mjelde in the pole vault (4.55m/14-11), Josh Colbert in the triple jump (14.09m/46-2 3/4 with a hyper wind of 4.2 meters per second), Jake Callaghan in the shot put (16.53m/54-2 3/4), and Tyler Jackson in the discus (48.92m/160-6).
