Seven Pac-12 Women’s Basketball players honored by Associated Press
SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 landed one women’s basketball player on the first, second and third All-America teams as announced by the Associated Press, which was announced Monday. Four more earned honorable mention status.
WASHINGTON’s Kelsey Plum (Poway, Calif.) was voted first team AP All-American becoming the first Husky to earn first team AP honors in the history of the program. Plum had a historic campaign which put an exclamation point on one of the greatest careers in NCAA history. She broke several school, conference and NCAA records this season, including the Pac-12’s and NCAA’s all-time scoring records. She also recently broke the NCAA’s single-season scoring record, tallying a total of 1,109 points this season. Plum averaged a Pac-12 record 31.7 points, 5.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game. She also shot 53.3 percent from the floor, and an impressive 42.9 percent from three-point distance. She also had 88.8 free throw percentage for the season.
Husky teammate Chantel Osahor (Phoenix, Ariz.) was voted to the second team after averaging 15.7 points and 15.3 rebounds per game, while dishing out 4.2 assists per game. Osahor had 30 rebounds in a game, breaking the Pac-12 single-game record. She also had 27 in the quarterfinal of the Pac-12 Tournament, setting a tournament record. Her single-season rebounding average is the second-highest rebounding average in Conference history.
OREGON STATE’s Sydney Wiese (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Beavers to a third-straight Pac-12 regular-season title and a second-straight trip to the NCAA Sweet 16, en route to earning third-team honors. She broke the Pac-12’s all-time three-point record, becoming the first player in Pac-12 history to make at least 300 three-pointers. Wiese averaged 15.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and was 45.9 percent from three-point range this season.
Honorable mention nods went to Kristine Anigwe of California, last season’s USBWA National Freshman of the Year. UCLA’s Jordin Canada was also honorable mention, after leading the Bruins to the Sweet 16. Erica McCall and Karlie Samuelson also received honorable mention recognition. They have led the Cardinal to the NCAA Women’s Final Four in Dallas this week. It is Stanford’s first trip since 2014.
