OJAI, Calif. – USC, Utah and Washington each won their opening-round matches to advance to quarterfinals of the 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Tennis Championship. USC get a 4-0 victory over Washington State, Utah came from behind to beat Arizona and Washington took a victory over Colorado all to determine the first Pac-12 Women’s team champion.

Sixth seed USC swept eleventh-seed Washington State, 4-0 to advance to tomorrow’s quarterfinal. The Trojans secured the doubles point on courts one and three as the team of Jessica Failla and Rianna Valdes won on court No. 1 and the duo of Angela Kulikov and Madison Westby took the victory on court No. 3. Two-time Pac-12 player of the week winner Gabby Smith got the singles win against WSU’s Bara Michalkova, 6-2, 6-3. Teammate Sydney Van Alphen followed with a win on court six, 6-2, 6-1 and Westby clinched the match for the Trojans with a 6-2, 6-1 victory. USC now faces No. 3 seed Arizona State tomorrow.

Utah advanced with a 4-2 win over No. 9 Arizona. The Utes took the doubles point with a win from the team of Taylor Calton and Jena Cheng on court No. 2 and partners Whitney Turley and Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa took the win on court No. 3. In singles play, Arizona got the early lead with wins by Paris Corley and Lauren Marker. But Utah’s Luisa Gerstner Da Rosa and Alexia Petrovic each scored a point with Whitney Turley clinching the match for the Utes with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory. Utah will face No. 1 seed Stanford in the quarterfinals.

Washington’s duo of Kenadi Hance and Stacey Fung went into a tiebreaker with Colorado’s Annabelle Andrinopoulos and Brigtte Beck to decide the doubles point with the Huskies taking the early lead. Alexis Prokopuik won in two sets for the Huskies followed by Pac-12 player of the week honoree Miki Kobayashi on court No. 2 and Nour Abbes taking the match with a win on court No. 3 (6-2, 6-4). The Huskies now face No. 2 California for a spot in the semifinals.

The 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Tennis Championships continue tomorrow at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club and the Weil Tennis Academy. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Apr. 28, with the championship match scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 29 at Libbey Park in Ojai, Calif.
