TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 1-ranked USC and No. 2-ranked UCLA advanced to face each other in the semifinal of the 2017 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Team Championship at the Arizona Beach Volleyball Courts in Tucson, Ariz., on Thursday. WASHINGTON also pulled off the only two upsets of the tournament to play for a chance to advance to the semis.

The undefeated Trojans (32-0) cruised to the semifinal round, dominating the competition, taking down eighth-seeded UTAH and fourth-seeded ARIZONA STATE by identical scores of 5-0. All five USC pairs did not drop a set today.

The Bruins (28-3) advanced with wins over the seventh-seeded Huskies and third-seeded ARIZONA, both by a score of 4-1. One of the highlights of the day was a tightly-contested match between UCLA’s twin sisters Nicole and Megan McNamara, and UA’s twin set of McKenna and Madison Witt. The Bruin duo had to hold off the Wildcats by a score of 21-19 and 21-18.

After losing to the Bruins, the Huskies (10-6) have put themselves back in contention in the contenders bracket. UW cruised past ninth-seeded OREGON, 5-0, then easily took care of sixth-seeded CALIFORNIA, 5-0, for the first upset of the day. UW was then triumphant in a 3-2 victory over ASU, coming down to a three-set thriller in the No. 4 matchup between Washington’s Melanie Wade and Shayne McPherson, and the Sun Devils’ Kassidy Pickrell and Mia Rivera. Playing in an elimination match, Wade and McPherson dropped the first set, but bounced back to win the next two to clinch the win for Washington (17-21, 21-14, 15-12).

Host ARIZONA (17-9) also survived a three-setter, pulling out a 3-2 victory over fifth-seeded STANFORD in the contenders bracket. The Wildcats had the hometown crowd on their side, propelling UA’s Brooke Burling and Mia Mason to a come-from-behind win, 17-21, 21-14, 15-12.

The action continues in the team competition with the top-two teams in the country kicking off the action in the semifinals at 9 a.m. The Huskies and Wildcats follow at 10 a.m. playing in the contenders bracket to compete for a spot in the semifinal round.

All matches in the team bracket is televised on Pac-12 Networks. The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, after which the pairs championship begins at 3 p.m.
