NCAA Men's Tennis Championships: Five Pac-12 teams headed to second round

Of the six teams from the Conference of Champions that took the courts on the Friday around the country in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, all but one advanced to the second round.

UCLA 4, Army 0

UCLA breezed to a 4-0 shutout of Army Friday in Los Angeles to start their path through the NCAA Tournament. The Bruins got off to a good start, claiming the double point with wins by Austin Rapp/Logan Staggs over Sam Lampman/Gregory Shannon, 6-1, and Maxime Cressy/Ben Goldberg defeating Myles Conlin/Nikita Pereverzin, 6-4.

From there, Staggs took down Grant Reichmann 6-0, 6-3, before Ben Goldberg closed out Michael Sienko, 6-2, 6-1. Army's last chance was extinguished when Martin Redlicki finished off Michael Nguyen, 6-3, 6-4.  

The Bruins now face off with Ole Miss at 1 p.m. PT. 

Oregon 4, Memphis 2

The Ducks are headed to the College Station Regional final after closing out Memphis 4-2 Friday afternoon. It's the first time in program history the team from Eugene has gotten an NCAA Tournament win in back-to-back years. Thing were trending positively after winning the doubles point. Memphis' Jan Pallares/Matt Story defeated Simon Stevens/Akihiro Tanaka, 6-3, before Oregon's Jayson Amos/Armando Soermarno evened things with a 6-3 victory over Kai Lemke/Andrew Watson. Cormac Clissold/Thomas Laurent clinched the pairs point with a 6-4 win over Felix Rauch/Ryan Peniston.

The Tigers bounched back when Story defeated Ethan Young-Smith, 6-4, 6-3. The Ducks' Clissold wored hard to rgeain the dge, besting Pallares 1-6, 6-2, 6-2. Laurent inched Oregon closer to advancing with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Memphis' Peniston.The Tigers staved off elimnation when Lemke defeated Tanaka 6-1, 2-6, 7-5. But it was Stevens that secured a second-round berth for the Ducks, topping Watson, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Oregon will now take on regional host Texas A&M at 12 p.m. PT.

USC 4, Denver 0

The Trojans blanked Denver to comfortably advance to Saturday's second round in Los Angeles. Straight-set victories locked up the doubles point where Rob Bellamy/Jack Jaede defated Wyatt Lovera/Pedro Fernandez, 6-1, and Nick Crystal/Laurens Verboven topped Diogo Rocha/Ruder Hook, 6-4.

Sporting a 1-0 lead, USC's Riley Smith kept things rolling with a win over Sean Huynh 6-2, 6-3. Brandon Holt claimed a win over the Pioneers' Yannick James 6-2, 6-4. In unrelenting fashion Thibault Forget tallied the clinching win over Denver's Fernandez 6-4, 6-1. 

The Trojans will try secure a berth in round of 16 when they face off with Wisconsin at 1 p.,m. PT.

Stanford 4, Idaho 0

The Cardinal made quick work of Idaho on The Farm, dispatching the Vandals in dominant fashion. The double point was claimed by Brandon Sutter/David Wilczynski (over Felipe Fonseca/Guilherme Scarpelli, 6-4) and Michael Genender/Sameer Kumar (over Lucas Cutinho/Esteban Santibanez, 7-5). 

Tom Fawcett kept things rolling for the Cardinal, claiming a win over Mark Kovacs 6-2, 6-3. Stanford's Kumar needed to go to a tiebreaker, but he managed to down Fonseca 6-4, 7-6 (3). The clincher was also decided with a tiebreak as Sutter closed out Cutinho 6-3, 7-5 (6). 

The Cardinal take on Michigan at Stanford Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.

California 4, Tennessee Tech 0

In the fourth Pac-12 shutout of the day, the Golden Bears defeated Tennessee Tech Friday afternoon in Berkeley. Victories by Bjorn Hoffmann/J.T. Nishimura over Marc Mila/Jorge Alfonzo (6-1) and Filip Bergevi/Florian Lakat over Alberto Esteban/Guillermo Nicolas (6-1) locked up the doubles point for the hosting team.

Cal continued its domination in singles play, winning all six of the first sets. Hoffmann was the first to finish, knocking off Carlos Tajes 6-1, 6-3. Billy Griffith put the Golden Bears' up 3-1 overall, defeating Alfonzo 6-1, 6-0. Nishimura locked things up with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mila.

The Golden Bears will face Northwestern Saturday afternoon at noon PT.

Tulane 4, Washington 2

The Huskies were the long Pac-12 team that fell on Friday, dropping a 4-2 match to Tulane in Austin. Washington dropped the doubles point to the Green Wave, despite Kawika Lam/Enzo Sommer topping Evan Moore/Tyler Schick, 6-4. Luis Erlenbusch/Constantin Schmitz evened things for the Tulane, defeating Amit Batta/Wendell Watanbe, 6-4, before Chin-Shan Jao/Sebastian Rey clinched things over UW's Piers Foley/Jake Douglas 7-6 (7-2). 

Batta pulled the Huskies even with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Schick. UW even grabbed a lead when Sommer downed Erlenbusch 7-5, 6-4. But that would be the last match Washington would win. Jao took down Foley 6-4, 6-4. The Green Wave's Rey used a tiebreaker to edge Gal Hakak 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. Tulane sealed things with another tiebreak as Moore defeated Stewart 7-6 (7-5), 1-6, 7-5.
