Pac-12 announces women's tennis All-Conference Honors

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 Conference announced today the women’s tennis All-Pac-12 honors for the 2017 season, as determined by a polling of the Conference coaches. UCLA’s Ena Shibahara was voted Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year and Freshman/Newcomer of the Year. UCLA’s pair of Jada Hart and Terri Fleming were named Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year. USC’s head coach Richard Gallien was named Pac-12 Coach of the Year. The All-Pac-12 teams were also announced. 

Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year/Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year – Ena Shibahara, UCLA
Shibahara (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.), ranked fifth in the country, is the first women’s tennis player in history to be named Pac-12 Singles Athlete of the Year and Freshman/Newcomer of the Year. She is the fifth UCLA player to receive Pac-12 Player of the Week with the most recent coming from Robin Anderson who won the award in 2014 and 2015 and the sixth UCLA player to win Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year. Shibahara is the Pac-12 automatic berth in singles and doubles with Jada Hart into the NCAA Division I singles and doubles championship. The first-year player, who holds a 37-5 record on the year (17-2 in dual-match play) has won 11 straight matches from her Court 1 position. In doubles, meanwhile, the duo of Shibahara-Wiley lost its first match of the season during the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Championships. The pair is now 9-1. 

Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year – Jada Hart and Terri Fleming, UCLA
Hart (Colton, Calif.) and Fleming (Brooklyn, N.Y.) are the fourth pair in Bruin history to be named Pac-12 Doubles team of the Year. The duo boasts a 13-2 record for the season, going 9-2 in dual matches. They are ranked No. 32 in the country (as of May 4). They are 5-0 against nationally-ranked opponents. They won seven straight matches from March 4-April 8 and clinched the doubles point six times this season (March 4, March 11, March 31, April 1, April 7, April 8). Hart was also awarded Pac-12 Player of the Week on April 10.

Pac-12 Coach of the Year – Richard Gallien, USC
Gallien has been named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year for the sixth time in his 22 seasons at USC. He is also a four-time ITA Region Coach of the Year. Each of Gallien’s teams have advanced into the NCAA Tournament with three appearing in the semifinals and five others making it to the quarterfinals. Under his watch, USC has finished in the national Top 20 rankings 19 times, inlacing 11 Top 10 placings. Four of his teams won the Pac-12 title and eight others were league runners-up. The Trojans made it to the Semifinals of the Pac-12 Team Championships where they lost to California 4-3.
