Roundup: National title for Stanford, Pac-12 titles for Washington and Oregon

May 15, 2017

Stanford

Stanford women’s water polo won the NCAA championship by outlasting UCLA 8-7 in the finals, getting the game-winning goal from Maggie Steffens with nine seconds left. A fitting way to the end of Steffens’ collegiate career. Name a more dominant athlete at Stanford in the last 10-15 years; I’ll wait.

USC

What. A. Win. USC women’s lacrosse upset third-seeded Florida 15-12 to advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the second straight season. The Trojans will now face Boston College on Saturday in Massachusetts, even though the Trojans are the higher-ranked team…

Arizona

Arizona softball earned the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA tournament and is one of eight Pac-12 teams in the tourney. Everyone besides Stanford made it to the Big Dance from the Pac-12.

Utah

Kyle Goon informs us that Utah softball earned a No. 11 seed and will host a regional field of four teams that includes in-state foe BYU. This is the first time in program history that the Utes will host.

Oregon

No surprise here, as Oregon swept the Pac-12 Track & Field Championships for the ninth year in a row, breezing past second-place USC on both the men’s and women’s sides.

Washington

Meanwhile, Washington swept the Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Rowing Championships, edging out second-place Cal on both sides.

Washington State

Washington State’s Mihaela-Teodora Berindei was named Pac-12 Women’s Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, boasting a 3.93 GPA as an accounting major.

California

Cal women’s tennis is on to the NCAA round of 16 after sweeping LSU 4-0 on Sunday. Up next for the Golden Bears is Vanderbilt on Friday at the University of Georgia.

Oregon State

It was a great weekend for Oregon State baseball in sweeping the rival Ducks, clinching the Pac-12 title outright and getting Pat Casey win No. 1,000, but now the Beavers have their sights set on bigger goals, writes Danny Moran.

Arizona State

Arizona State clinched the Territorial Cup Series for 2016-17 thanks to the work done by its track & field program at the Pac-12 Championships.

UCLA

Check out this Ramona Shelbourne piece on how LaVar and Lonzo Ball are able to keep your attention. I’m only six grafs deep into this article as I link it here and it’s already amazing. I need more LaVar in my life like Will Ferrell needs more cowbell; this guy is amazing (and oh yeah, his oldest son is a pretty good basketball player).

Colorado

Pat Rooney tells us that Team Colorado is ready for another go in The Basketball Tournament, the winner-take-all $2 million tournament. Additions to this year’s team include Josh Scott, Chris Copeland and Xavier Talton, as Team Colorado lost in the finals last year to Overseas Elite.
