Pac-12 Tennis finishes NCAA Team Championships, Singles and Doubles up next
Athens, Georgia - The STANFORD women had a hard fought battle in the NCAA tournament, but ultimately ended as the NCAA runners-up. Next on the plate for Pac-12 men’s and women’s tennis are the singles and doubles NCAA championships. Singles begin Wednesday, May 25th and doubles begin Thursday, May 26th.
11 individual women compete in the singles competition and four pairs compete in the doubles competition. On the men’s side, six individuals compete in the singles competition and three pairs compete in the doubles competition.
No. 7 Stanford was the final remaining Pac-12 women’s tennis team in the NCAA tournament, taking its journey all the way to the championship match. The Cardinal defeated Idaho in the first round, TCU in the second round, No. 10 Michigan in the third round, No. 2 North Carolina in the quarterfinals, and No. 3 Ohio State in the semifinals. Stanford battled with No. 3 Ohio State for the spot in finals, taking the match all the way to the final singles court, which ended in a win for the Card, 4-3, after overtime. In the championship match, No. 1 Florida came in strong taking the doubles point, but Stanford fought all the way to the end. No. 1 Florida ended up winning the match 4-1.
Arizona State (vs. Florida State), Oregon (vs. NC State), USC (vs. Denver), and Washington (vs. Clemson) lost in the first round. UCLA lost to to No. 12 Pepperdine in the second round, after defeating UC Santa Barbara in the first round. No. 13 California lost in the third round, after defeating San Jose State in the first round and LSU in the second round.
On the men’s side, six teams earned berths to the 2017 NCAA Championship. Washington was defeated in the first round by Clemson. Oregon was defeated in the second round by No. 12 Texas A&M, after beating Memphis in the first round. No. 8 California, No. 16 Stanford, and No. 4 USC were bested in the third round.
No. 8 California beat Tennessee Tech in the first round, Northwestern in the second round, before losing to No. 9 North Carolina in the third round. No. 16 Stanford beat Idaho in the first round, Michigan in the second round, but lost to No. 1 Wake Forest in the third round. No. 4 USC defeated Denver in the first round, Wisconsin in the second round, but lost to No. 13 Georgia in the third round.
No. 5 UCLA was the last Pac-12 team standing on the men’s side. The Bruins beat Army West Point in the first round, Mississippi in the second round, No. 12 Texas A&M in the third round, but was bested by No. 13 Georgia in the quarterfinals.
