NCAA Softball Super Regionals: UCLA advances to Women's College World Series, Oregon, Arizona, UW take game 1

May 26, 2017

UCLA

The Bruins are headed back to Oklahoma City and the Women's College World Series after blanking Ole Miss, 1-0. UCLA swept the Rebels in the Super Regionals.

The Bruins scored in the top of the first on an RBI double from Madeline Jelenicki that scored Brianna Tautalafua. Then the pitching took over. Rachel Garcia and Selina Ta'amilo combined to throw seven shut-out innings, Garcia no-hitting Ole Miss through the first four. They struck out nine while only walking three.

Oregon

The Ducks took game one, 4-0 over Kentucky, behind a stellar performance from Megan Kleist. The freshman phenom - and Pac-12 Co-Freshman of the Year - pitched a complete-game shutout while striking out eight

Nikki Udria got Oregon on the board with an RBI double in the bottom of the third to score Alexis Mack. The Ducks added some insurance in the sixth when they loaded the bases with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. Groundouts from Mia Camuso and Madi Bishop made it 3-0, and Shannon Rhodes came home on a fielding error to give Kleist all the run support she'd need.

Arizona

The Wildcats took game 1, 3-2, in a walk-off thriller over Baylor on Friday night. Not surprisingly, Katiyana Mauga provided a huge part of the Arizona offense. She got them on the board with an RBI double in the first before crushing her 92nd career home run in into the bleachers in the third.

The Bears made it interesting when they tied it up on a two-run home run off the bat of Ari Hawkins in the top of the sixth. But that was just setting the stage for late heroics. Mandie Perez led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. An intentional walk to Mauga and a single by Mo Mercado loaded the bases, and a single up the middle from Jessie Harper sealed the win for the 'Cats on a special day - her birthday.

Washington

Utah

Morganne Flores' monster night at the plate gave the Huskies a 10-4 game 1 win over Utah in Seattle.

UW's offense wasted no time. Casey Stangel's RBI in the first got the ball rolling before Flores sent a ball over the fence for a three-run home run. Stangel added another RBI in the second to make it 5-0.

The Utes fought back in the top of the fourth. Hannah Flippen and Bridget Castro single before Kelly Martinez hit her own three-run shot out of the ballpark to get Utah to within two.

But Flores wasn't done. Ali Aguilar doubled before Stangel and Sis Bates walked to load the bases before Flores crushed a pitch over the fence in left field for a grand slam, giving her seven RBIs on the night. Taylor Van Zee added a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth for UW.
