May 30, 2017

Washington

Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend… the Pac-12 sure did! Washington women’s rowing won the NCAA title Sunday in New Jersey, giving the Pac-12 its 500th NCAA team championship.

UCLA

Way back on Friday, UCLA softball advanced to the Women’s College World Series by beating Ole Miss 1-0. The Bruins will start play in Oklahoma City against LSU Thursday at 11:30 a.m. PT, and joining UCLA in OKC are Washington and Oregon.

USC

Meanwhile, USC men’s golf qualified for match play at the NCAA championships for the third straight season. Unfortunately for the Trojans, they lost to Illinois in the quarterfinals Tuesday morning.

Oregon

The defending national champion Oregon Ducks also reach the match-play portion of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships by rallying eight spots in the final round of stroke play.

Oregon State

As expected, Oregon State baseball nabbed the No. 1 national seed for the NCAA tournament and will start its postseason Friday against Holy Cross.

Stanford

Stanford baseball also earned a national seed, and the No. 8 Cardinal start Thursday against Sacramento State. UCLA and Arizona also made the NCAA tournament.

Utah

The defending Pac-12 baseball champion Utes didn’t make the NCAA tournament this year, but Utah did end the season by sweeping Arizona State, winning the last game on a walk-off pinch hit to defeat the Sun Devils 11-10 (Kyle Goon, Salt Lake Tribune).

Arizona State

From last week- Arizona State cornerback Armand Perry is retiring because of injuries. Jeff Metcalfe has more in the link.

Washington State

Washington State men’s basketball coach Ernie Kent has hired Wazzu all-time assists leader Bennie Seltzer as an assistant coach. Seltzer was most recently an assistant at Loyola Chicago. There’s some nice momentum rolling for Kent in Pullman.

Arizona

The Associated Press tells us that former Arizona men’s basketball guard Kobi Simmons is determined to prove that leaving school wasn’t a mistake. Simmons, who wants to show NBA teams he can play the point in pre-draft workouts, is a projected second-round pick.

Colorado

Brian Howell tells us about Colorado quarterback Steven Montez mentoring kids at Steve Clarkson’s 13th Annual Quarterback Retreat in Coronado, Calif. He was one of about 25 college quarterbacks working as mentors for the young gunslingers.

California
