Roundup: Stanford looks to Cal for Mark Marquess successor

Stanford

David Esquer has been named the new Stanford baseball head coach, AD Bernard Muir announced Friday. Esquer replaces the retired Mark Marquess, a man Esquer played for when he was on The Farm in the 1980’s.

California

And here’s the release from Cal on David Esquer stepping down as Cal baseball coach, a job he held for 18 seasons. Esquer was named National Coach of the Year in 2011 after leading the Golden Bears to the College World Series.

Utah

Utah has added men’s lacrosse as an NCAA sport, the university announced Friday. Utah becomes the first Pac-12 school to sponsor a men’s lacrosse program at the NCAA level. Next year, the Pac-12 will sponsor women’s lacrosse.

Oregon State

Oregon State pitcher Luke Heimlich will not play in the College World Series but would like to rejoin the team next season, he announced Thursday (The Oregonian/OregonLive). OSU President Ed Ray also released a statement saying he supports a potential Heimlich return to the team next season.

Colorado

The University of Colorado Board of Regents approved Mike MacIntyre’s contract extension through the 2021 season, the university announced Thursday. MacIntyre will get $16.25 million over the next five seasons, starting with a $3.1 million salary for the 2017 campaign.

UCLA

Earlier this week, LaVar Ball said his sons LiAngelo and LaMelo will be one-and-done at UCLA. “Gelo is going [to] be one-and-done whether he’s good or bad… I’m going to put him in the draft, hope they don’t take him. Bring him into the Lakers as a free agent, let him wind up with his brother and watch how good they play together,” Ball told ESPN (CBS Sports with the link). This, uh, doesn’t sound like the best idea.

Arizona State

Former Arizona State golfer Jon Rahm was shown tossing and slamming his clubs in the opening round of the U.S. Open, which led to golf commentators criticizing him for his temper (Golf Digest). Rahm shot a four-over par 76 on Thursday but was able to settle down as the round went on.

Arizona

Arizona women’s volleyball released its 2017 schedule Thursday in conjunction with the Pac-12 announcing that Pac-12 Networks will air 87 women’s volleyball matches in 2017 along with three more matches being televised on ESPNU.

Washington State

Washington State football added Juco linebacker Dymund Richardson, the younger brother of former Colorado receiver Paul Richardson. It is likely that he will be eligible to play for the Cougs in the fall with three years of on-field eligibility and a possible redshirt year, Jacob Thorpe notes in the link above.

Oregon

Tyson Alger of The Oregonian/OregonLive checks in on former Oregon men’s basketball player Dylan Ennis, who is flying across the country for pre-draft workouts with NBA teams.

Washington
