Roundup: Retirement plan included in Kyle Whittingham contract extension

Utah Athletics

Utah

Aaron Falk of The Salt Lake Tribune dives into Kyle Whittingham’s contract extension with Utah, which includes a nice retirement plan if he decides to retire while under contract at Utah. The 57-year-old Whittingham is under contract through 2021.

Washington State

Washington State football coach Mike Leach believes Texas Tech owes him about $2.5 million for the 2009 season, and he airs his grievances with the school in this USA TODAY Sports piece by Brent Schrotenboer. Texas Tech fired him in December 2009 for legal cause due to alleged mistreatment of a player suffering from a concussion (Leach denies the allegation).

UCLA

NBA free agency starts at midnight Saturday, and Marc Stein is reporting that Jrue Holiday is expected to re-sign with the New Orleans Pelicans on a nice five-year deal.

Arizona

Get paid, my man – former Arizona men’s basketball guard Kyle Fogg has agreed to a $2 million deal to play in China with the Guangzhou Lions, per David Pick (Sportando on the link). Fogg played last year in Spain (easily a top 5 league in the world, maybe top 2-3 depending on who you ask) with Unicaja Malaga.

Arizona State

Jeff Metcalfe writes that Arizona State baseball coach Tracy Smith is not rushing to hire a pitching coach, opting to remain patient and find the best option. That said, Smith would like to have a pitching coach within the next few weeks.

Oregon

The Pac-12 released the men’s basketball pairings Thursday, so take a look at Oregon’s conference schedule courtesy of GoDucks.com.

California

Dana O’Neil of The Washington Post whips up this feature story on Cal men’s swimming commit Reece Whitley. The article deals a lot with the role race plays in the conversation with black swimmers (Whitley is black). Swimming analyst Rowdy Gaines thinks Whitley is the most important male swimmer to arrive on the scene since Michael Phelps, so that’s saying something.

Stanford

Rick Maese of The Washington Post discusses what the addition of the 1,500-meter race to the 2020 Olympics means for Stanford swimmer Katie Ledecky. In summary, it means she has a great shot to get a gold medal in a new event, because the 1,500 is her jam.

USC

Can’t say I’ve seen footage like this before – watch Los Angeles Rams head coach (and former USC football player) Jeff Fisher tell his Rams staff that he’s been fired. This is a clip from All or Nothing: A Season with the Los Angeles Rams, which debuts Friday on Amazon Prime, and the moment happened after the Rams got shellacked by the Atlanta Falcons in a Week 14 matchup.

Washington

This happened last week, but a group of former Washington men’s basketball players lost to a Gonzaga alumni team 111-106 at Gonzaga’s Hoopfest alumni game (Seattle Times). (D-League legend) Justin Dentmon scored 37 points for the UW team, while Matt Bouldin dropped in 22 for the Zags’ squad.

Oregon State

The Oregonian/OregonLive hits us with an Oregon State 2016-17 athletics year in review.
