Roundup: Cal grad becomes 1st woman to call football on Pac-12 Networks

Cal grad Kate Scott will become the first woman to do play-by-play for a football game on Pac-12 Networks when Arizona faces Northern Arizona Sept. 2 (Awful Announcing on the link; don’t worry, this website isn’t calling her an “awful announcer”). As a play-by-play man myself, I always enjoy a quality call, and Kate is the cream of the crop. Kudos, Kate.

Washington women’s volleyball was picked to win the Pac-12, it was announced Wednesday. Defending national champion Stanford is slotted second.

Former Stanford women’s water polo star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Maggie Steffens is a finalist for the Women’s Sports Foundation Sportswoman of the Year award, it was announced Wednesday. I’ve watched a lot of Stanford sports, and I’d say she is one of the five most dominant Stanford athletes of the last 10 years (other potential candidates- Nneka Ogwumike, Andrew Luck, Candice Wiggins, Christen Press, Brook Lopez, Kelley O’Hara, Toby Gerhart, Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Morris. Now of Yahoo Sports fame, Pete Thamel wonders if UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen will live up to his potential this year. I mean, I don’t know what you wanted from him last year when he was out half the season and the Bruins didn’t have a solid running game; he’s still a helluva QB.
