Roundup: Tyler Huntley named Utah's starting quarterback

Shocking news out of Salt Lake City, where sophomore Tyler Huntley was named Utah’s starting quarterback (The Deseret News). Huntley beat out senior and team captain Troy Williams and Alabama transfer Cooper Bateman.

USC

USC is No. 4 in the Associated Press preseason top 25, looking up only at Alabama, Ohio State and Florida State. Also in the top 25 from the Pac-12 are No. 8 Washington, No. 14 Stanford and No. 24 Washington State.

California

Overall, 'twas a very good opening weekend for Pac-12 women’s soccer teams, and here’s the Pac-12 Networks recap of Cal women’s soccer defeating Santa Clara 2-1. The Golden Bears scored twice in the final 10 minutes to come out on top (looks like a pretty soft penalty awarded from that camera angle in the recap, but hey, congrats on the win).

In his top five player rankings at each position, Gary Parrish of CBS Sports believes that Arizona’s Allonzo Trier is the top shooting guard in the country. He also has DeAndre Ayton as his No. 1 center in college basketball.

Stanford

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey showed off his explosiveness in the Panthers’ preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans, writes David Newton of ESPN. The former Cardinal standout had a 17-yard rushing touchdown and a 38-yard reception on a screen pass.

Arizona State

Doug Haller tells us that wide receiver Frank Darby was a standout in Arizona State’s scrimmage Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium.

Washington

Washington backup quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels is “brimming with confidence” in his fourth fall camp, in the words of head coach Chris Petersen, as told to Adam Jude. Go Bells.

Washington State

Theo Lawson of The Spokesman-Review notes that Washington State safety Robert Taylor and the Cougs are hoping for a better start to the 2017 season. Lawson was ejected from the 2016 opener against Eastern Washington for leading with his helmet on a hit (the Cougs lost that game and started 0-2 before reeling off eight straight wins).
