Roundup: Ross Bowers named Cal's starting quarterback

California

Ross Bowers was named Cal’s starting quarterback for the season opener at North Carolina, head coach Justin Wilcox announced Monday night (San Francisco Chronicle).

Washington

Washington linebacker Azeem Victor is suspended for the season opener against Rutgers for a violation of team rules, head coach Chris Petersen announced Monday (ESPN). It was also announced that sophomore defensive back Austin Joyner has been suspended for the first two games.

Utah

Utah football coach Kyle Whittingham is uncertain about safety Chase Hansen’s availability for the season opener Thursday against North Dakota, notes Lynn Worthy of The Salt Lake Tribune. Hansen has been practicing for the last week or so after missing the start of camp due to an unspecified injury.

USC

USC volleyball outside hitter Khalia Lanier was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 4.36 kills per set on a .400 hitting percentage in helping lead the 18th-ranked Trojans to three wins over LMU, Michigan and Albany.

Stanford

Speaking of volleyball rankings, Stanford is the new No. 1 team in the nation after preseason No. 1 Texas lost its season opener to now-No. 3 Florida (NCAA.com).

Herbert was a counselor at the Manning camp in Louisiana in the offseason. He has also put on 15 pounds of muscle, so the dude is stronger going into his sophomore campaign.

Thuc Nhi Nguyen of the Los Angeles Daily News writes that UCLA football is counting on young guys to bring more depth to the defense. One guy to look out for is sophomore linebacker Lokeni Toailoa, who is “ahead of his time,” according to his position coach Scott White.
