Roundup: $10 million donation makes it Spieker Field at the Rose Bowl
Kyle Bonagura reports that the Rose Bowl field has been named Spieker Field thanks to a $10 million donation from UCLA alum Tod Spieker and his family. So the official title will be Spieker Field at the Rose Bowl for at least the next 25 years.
This is might be a bit of hyperbole (or a lot of hyperbole), but Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley is being compared to Marcus Mariota by former Oregon wide receiver and current Ute teammate Darren Carrington and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham (Deseret News). Some praise for a guy who has started three games.
In his Pac-12 notebook, Kurt Kragthorpe writes that Cal’s defense will be tested by USC on Saturday in Berkeley. The Golden Bears have looked so much better on that side of the ball under Justin Wilcox, but USC is no North Carolina, Weber State or Ole Miss.
The Pac-12 men’s basketball schedule was released Tuesday, and Gary Parrish of CBS Sports opines that Arizona has a favorable conference schedule by not having to make the trip to Los Angeles to face USC and UCLA on the road.
Pac-12 play is underway in women’s volleyball, and No. 8 Oregon swept Oregon State 25-14, 25-23, 25-19 Tuesday night on Pac-12 Networks, and you can watch the recap in the preceding link.
Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY Sports writes that we’ll see how real “The Rise” is for Colorado football when it plays Washington on Saturday. The Buffs haven’t defeated a top-10 team in 10 years.
Meanwhile, Matt Calkins of The Seattle Times notes that Washington’s highly-touted defense will face its stiffest test thus far against Colorado. Both teams are 3-0 but haven’t exactly had challenging schedules.
Danny Moran writes that Oregon State’s offense is moving forward without quarterback Jake Luton, who suffered a thoracic spinal fracture Saturday in the loss to Washington State. Darell Garretson will start in his stead (Luton is listed as “week-to-week”).
Stanford football coach David Shaw talked about his team’s 1-2 start in his Tuesday press conference, jots Michael C. Lewis of The San Jose Mercury News. This is the worst start for the Cardinal since 2008.
