NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament: WSU upsets two-seeded UCF; Stanford powers past Utah Valley, USC edges EWU

Four Pac-12 teams were in action on Saturday during Day 2 of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament. The conference is well represented in the field, qualifying seven teams overall. 

Here's how those games unfolded:

WSU

Washington State 1, Central Florida 0

The Cougars travelled nearly 3,000 miles to Orlando and upset No. 2-seeded UCF, 1-0, for an impressive road win.

WSU's lone goal came on a UCF miscue. The Cougars scored early, during the game's fifth minute, when a UCF defender mistimed her jump and accidently scored an own goal. Washington State goalie Ella Dederick blanked the high-octane Knights, notching six saves. WSU won despite getting outshot, 19-5.

With the upset win, Washington State gets to the 10-win plateau and advances to face Tennessee in the second round. 

Stanford

Stanford 9, Utah Valley 1

Stanford's powerful offense came to play in the first round of the tournament, setting a program record in a postseason game with nine goals and routing Utah Valley. 

It was also the most goals scored in a first round of the NCAA tournament since 2013. 

Sam Tran and Madison Haley led the Cardinal with a pair of goals apiece, while five other Stanford players put the ball in the net. Haley got her team on the board just five minutes into the match and Civana Kuhlmann add a goal just three minutes later.

Libby Weber closed the gap with Utah Valley's lone goal, before the Cardinal rattled off four more before halftime. Tran closed out the game with her two scores in the final ten minutes. 

Next Stanford will face Auburn on Friday night at 7 p.m. PT/8 MT at home. 

USC

USC 2, Eastern Washington 1 (2OT)

The defending champions began their postseason quest by overcoming a one-goal deficit. The Trojans scored once after halftime and again in the second overtime period to down Eastern Washington, 2-1. The Trojans now advance to face Baylor in the second round.

Erika Okuma delivered the go-ahead goal; Ashleigh Plumptre had the assist for USC. The sudden-death goal, which came 16 seconds into the second overtime, was Okuma's second of the season.  

Alex Anthony notched the other USC goal for an equalizer in the 50th minute. Eastern Washington had the early lead after scoring in the game's fifth minute. USC goalie Kaylie Collins had seven saves in the win. 

California

 Santa Clara 2, California 1

A battle of two Bay Area teams turned into a quality contest. 

Santa Clara prevailed, 2-1, over California by breaking a 1-1 tie in the 65th minute with a goal from Kelsey Turnbow. The Golden Bears had chances down the stretch but couldn't find an equalizer to extend their season. 

Santa Clara had more scoring opportunities, outshooting the Golden Bears, 17-7.

Miranda Nild scored the lone Cal goal, a penalty kick score, during the 27th minute. Cal (13-6-1) earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th consecutive season.
