Roundup: Jim Mora out, Chip Kelly in?

UCLA fired head football coach Jim Mora on Sunday following the loss to USC, the school announced. Mora was 46-30 in six seasons on the job and took the Bruins to the 2012 Pac-12 Football Championship Game. Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated reports that both UCLA and Florida are targeting Chip Kelly as their next head coach.

Big weekend on The Farm – Stanford won the Big Game for the eighth straight year on Saturday, while Stanford women’s soccer advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals by beating Florida State 1-0 and two-time defending national champion Stanford men’s soccer moved on to the NCAA round of 16 by outlasting Pacific on penalty kicks.

Great effort from the Cougs, but Washington State women’s soccer lost to Florida 1-0 in double overtime in an NCAA tournament third round game to wrap up the season at 10-8-4. The Cougars advanced past Tennessee on PKs in the second round on Friday.

Defending national champion Cal men’s water polo is the No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament after defeating Stanford 10-9 in overtime in the third-place game of the MPSF Tournament.

Former Arizona running back Orlando Bradford was sentenced to five years in prison Monday morning after pleading guilty to two felony counts of aggravated assault involving two different women, reports Caitlin Schmidt of the Arizona Daily Star.

USC defeated crosstown rival UCLA 28-23 Saturday night in the Coliseum, and Chris Johnson of Sports Illustrated writes that USC kept itself in the College Football Playoff hunt with the win. Show me another 10-2 or 10-1 team in the country that played or will play 12 straight weeks, had a Friday night road game after a Saturday road game and played 10 Power Five schools plus Notre Dame, with their lone non-big-name opponent being a team that played in a New Year’s Six bowl last season.

Following the thrilling 33-30 win over Utah Saturday night (Bob Rondeau with a tremendous call on the radio), Washington football players posed with an ESPN cupcake sign (SB Nation on the cupcake link, Associated Press on the gamer link). This, of course, goes back to the ESPN telecast where the sideline reporter used cupcakes as props to describe the Huskies’ non-conference schedule (which has Auburn on it next year, mind you).

Oregon football’s turnover chain caught plenty of ire on Twitter, as Ben Kercheval of CBS Sports points out. More importantly, however, the Ducks got Justin Herbert back and defeated Arizona to get to six wins and bowl eligibility, and Tyson Alger writes that Herbert’s return was “perfect timing” for the Ducks.

With both teams at 5-6 entering the season finale, Brian Howell writes that Colorado and Utah will battle for bowl eligibility when they meet Saturday night.

Christopher Kamrani of The Salt Lake Tribune wonders if Utah football can rebound following a heartbreaking loss to Washington, a game the Utes probably feel like they should have won.
