Stanford and UCLA advance to NCAA Women's Soccer Quarterfinals
No. 1-seeded Stanford and No. 2-seeded UCLA advance to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament quarterfinals beginning this Friday, Nov. 24. Seven Pac-12 teams entered the postseason with six advancing to the second record and three making the round of 16, including WASHINGTON STATE for the first time in program history.
Top-seeded Stanford (21-1-0, 11-0-0) advanced to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Florida State. Midfielder Jordan DiBiasi was the hero of the match, scoring her fifth game-winning goal of the season in the 79th minute to keep the Cardinal’s postseason run alive. Goalkeeper Alison Jahansouz earned her 10th shutout and is one clean sheet away from making the Cardinal top-10 single-season shutout list.
After hosting the first three rounds of the playoffs, the Cardinal improves to 13-0-0 at home while outscoring its opponents 57-1 at Cagan Stadium. The victory over the Seminoles was head coach Paul Ratcliffe’s 40th postseason win, boasting an all-time 40-11-4-playoff record. This is the ninth time in program history the Cardinal has hosted through the first four rounds of the tournament.
Stanford hosts No. 10 Penn State on Friday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. PT and is broadcast on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Bay Area. The Cardinal is 2-1-0 all-time against Penn State. Stanford is looking to advance to the program’s eighth College Cup.
No. 2-seed UCLA defeated No. 3-seed Virginia, 2-1, to advance to the program’s 13th all-time quarterfinal appearance. Tied 1-1, and the game winding down, the Bruins capitalized on UVA’s man-down situation due to a red card issued in the 85th minute. Anika Rodriguez and Ashley Sanchez connected for the game-winning goal with 1:20 remaining in regulation with Rodriguez notching the goal. This was the second-consecutive match the duo linked up to secure the team’s victory.
Of the 13 quarterfinal appearances, the Bruins have gone on to five semifinal matches, eventually moving on to the College Cup Finals four times with a National Championship in 2013. Head coach Amanda Cromwell became the second women’s soccer coach ever to win the NCAA title in her first season and only the second female coach to win the title. UCLA holds a 57-16-5 all-time NCAA Tournament record and have advanced to at least the round of 16 in four of the last five seasons.
The Bruins host Princeton on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 5:30pm PT at Drake Stadium. UCLA is 4-0 all-time against the Tigers, with the Bruins winning the last meeting, 7-0, back in 2012.
The Pac-12 currently holds an all-time record of 184-121-27 (.595) in the NCAA Tournament, with four national championships and five second-place finishes. It had the third-most conference representatives in the 64-team field with seven teams and posted back-to-back years with three teams seeded in the top four.
