Nine Pac-12 volleyball teams headed to the NCAA Tournament

Nov 28, 2017

Nine Pac-12 teams are headed to the NCAA Tournament, the most teams of any Conference in the nation, the committee announced on Sunday night. Five of those teams are also seeded with defending NCAA Champion STANFORD garnering a No. 3 seed. The Cardinal won its NCAA-record tying seventh national title and the Conference’s 15th last season, also the most of any team in the nation.

WASHINGTON (No. 8), USC (No. 10), UTAH (No. 11) and UCLA (No. 15) were also seeded in the tournament. Also participating in the postseason event are COLORADO, OREGON, OREGON STATE and WASHINGTON STATE. It is the third time in the last five years the Conference has received at least nine tournament bids with a record 10 earning invitations in 2014.

Pac-12 Networks will air first/second-round sites from Salt Lake City and Stanford, Calif. The Utes’ first-round match vs. Cleveland State starts at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT on Thursday, Nov. 30. On Friday, Dec. 1, Pac-12 Bay Area airs the first-round match of the Cardinal vs. Bakersfield. If both Pac-12 teams win, the second-round matches will be televised on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

With a top-16 seeding, teams earned the right to host first- and second-round matches. With no predetermined regional sites, the highest-remaining seeds host the round of 16 and quarterfinal rounds for the opportunity to advance to the national semifinals.

Opening-round action will be played this weekend, Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at 16 campus sites. Teams winning both rounds move on to regional play Dec. 8-9 at four non-predetermined campus sites, which will be announced after play concludes on Dec. 2. The national semifinals and championship final matches take place in Kansas City, Missouri, on Dec. 14 and 16 at the Sprint Center.

PAC-12 IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … The Pac-12 has captured 15 out of 36 NCAA titles, including 13 of the last 26. With Stanford winning in 2016, it put it in a tie for the most in the nation by a program with seven. Four different Pac-12 teams have claimed the NCAA crown and has had at least sixth tournament berths for 18-consecutive years. Pac-12 teams have compiled an impressive 441-235 (.652) record in NCAA play. Toss out the 23 postseason matches between Conference teams and the league’s NCAA Tournament record against non-conference foes stands at 238-95 (.715) since 2001 and an overall mark of 374-173 (.684). Over the last 16 years, Pac-12 teams are 103-26 (.798) in the first round, including posting a NCAA- record 10-0 in 2015 after a NCAA record 10 league teams earned bids that year.

PAC-12 HONORS … In a vote of the league’s 12 coaches, STANFORD sophomore Kathryn Plummer was selected the Pac-12 Player of the Year. She is just the second player in league history and second from Stanford to earn the player of the year honor the year after winning the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year nod (since Bev Oden in 1989 and 1990). OREGON STATE’s Kylee McLaughlin was voted the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and sophomores Jenna Gray and Morgan Hentz were tabbed the Conferences Setter of the Year and Libero of the Year, respectively. OSU’s head coach Mark Barnard was voted the Pac-12 Coach of the Year.

AVCA POLL … The final regular-season AVCA Coaches poll has six Pac-12 teams featured with Pac-12 Champion Stanford leading the way again at No. 4. The Cardinal have appeared in the top five every week this season, including topping out at No. 1 on Aug. 28.

Washington is No. 10 in the polling, followed by No. 13 Utah, No. 14 USC and No. 17 UCLA. Oregon is at No. 24 while Colorado and Oregon State are receiving votes.

NCAA RPI … Four Pac-12 teams appear in the top 11 of the NCAA’s RPI and eight are in the top 31. Additionally, nine are in the top 40, and 10 of the 12 teams are in the top 100. For the full RPI, visit ncaa.com.

STANFORD WINS PAC-12 TITLE … Stanford claimed its 17th Pac-12 crown, by far the most of any team in the Conference. It was the team’s first since 2014. The Cardinal clinched the outright title on Nov. 15, sweeping USC, 3-0, at home.

• In the National Stats … The Pac-12 is the top blocking conference in the nation, collectively averaging 2.57 blocks per set due, in part, to three of the top-10 blocking teams in the nation residing in Pac-12. The Huskies are fifth in the category (3.05), followed by Stanford at No. 10 (3.00) and Washington State ranks 13th (2.91). Individually, Washington freshman Lauren Sanders leads the Conference with 1.47 blocks per set which is 15th in the country and Stanford’s Audrianna Fitzmorris is 17th in the nation, collecting 1.46 bps, teammate Tami Alade is 20th with a 1.43 blocks average and Washington State’s Jocelyn Urias (1.38) is listed at 24th.

• Stanford’s Kathryn Plummer and Oregon State’s Mary-Kate Marshall are two of the nation’s highest point producers. Plummer is sixth averaging league-best 5.43 points per set, while also ranking ninth in kills per set (4.70). Marshall’s 5.01 points per set are 18th in the country while her kills average of 4.36 is 19th. ARIZONA STATE’s Oluoma Okaro ranks 19th in points per set (4.95), also averaging 4.33 kps, good for 20th in the nation. CALIFORNIA’s Antzela Dempi is 11th in the nation in aces per set (0.47) while Stanford’s Jenna Gray’s 12.12 assists per set is the third-best average in the NCAA.

• Collectively, the Conference leads the nation in three statistical categories, heading into the week. It is the top blocking conference, but also produces the most points per set (16.99) and most assists (12.59). Pac-12 teams are collectively hitting at a .241 clip which is second-best among all conference behind the Big Ten (.260).

• Six of the top seven assist producers in the Pac-12 are underclassmen, with Stanford sophomore Jenna Gray leading the way with an 12.12 average. Though a senior, UCLA’s Sarah Sponcil is averaging 11.27 assists for second. It is her first season in the Pac-12, transferring to UCLA this season. Freshmen Brynna Deluzio (COLO) and Kylee McLaughlin (OSU) are third and fourth in the league, respectively.

UPSETS MOUNT … With so many upsets this season, can it really be called an “upset” anymore? There have been 27 upsets (based on the weekly AVCA poll) by Pac-12 teams this season so far, 21 coming in league matches. USC has recorded the most with six, four against league opponents. Colorado had five wins over ranked opponents, four in Pac-12 play and Oregon has knocked off five higher-ranked opponents (three in league matchups). Ten Pac-12 teams have recorded at least one upset. Most recently, then-No. 19 UCLA defeated then-No. 13 USC to earn a split in the series with the lower-ranked team winning on the other’s home court.

COLORADO IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … Second-year head coach Jesse Mahoney has the Buffs in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2014. Colorado is in the tournament for the 19th time and has an 11-18 record. It travels to Waco, Texas, to face James Madison (23-5) in the first round and could face Miami (Ohio) or 12th-seeded Baylor in the second round.

OREGON IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … The Ducks are in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh year in a row this time with first-year head coach Matt Ulmer leading the charge. Oregon is in the tournament for the 15th time and face Kennesaw State (21-4) to open postseason play. 13th-seeded BYU hosts the match, facing American in the first round. Oregon was in the NCAA final in 2012.

OREGON STATE IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … The Beavers are in the tournament for the fourth time in the history of the program and the second time in four years. OSU is 2-3 in its previous three appearances and NC State (20-11) in the first round in Austin, Texas, where sixth-seeded Texas hosts and takes on Fairfield.

STANFORD IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … The third-seeded Cardinal are in the tournament for the 37th time with first-year head coach Kevin Hambly leading the team to a No. 3 seed. It is one of just two teams, along with Penn State, to never miss out on a NCAA Tournament. Stanford is the winningest NCAA Tournament team ever, boasting a record 115 wins. It is also tied for the most NCAA titles with seven with the Nittany Lions. The Cardinal hosts the first and second round, taking on CS Bakersfield (19-13) with a potential matchup against Colorado State or Michigan.

UCLA IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … The No. 15-seed Bruins are in the NCAA Tournament for the 35th time in program history. Only four teams have received more NCAA Tournament invitational than the Bruins. UCLA won the NCAA title in 2011 in head coach Mike Sealy’s second season. The Bruins play Austin Peay (30-5) in the first round at home and host Denver and Cal Poly. UCLA is 88-31 all-time in the tournament.

USC IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … USC is making its 35th all-time appearance, boasting a 76-31 mark. The Trojans won the NCAA title in 1981, and then again in back-to-back years in 2002 and 2003. 10th-seeded USC hosts Central Arkansas (22-9) in the first round and could face San Diego or LSU in the second round at home. The Trojans have had a remarkable turnaround, finishing tied for second in the league after going just 10-10 last season and tying for seventh.

UTAH IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … Utah is in the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time ever, earning the No. 11 seed, its highest seeding ever and only the second time to be seeded top-16.  It also hosts a NCAA Tournament match for the third, the first two times in 2001 and 2005 when the Utes were not seeded. Utes hosts Cleveland State (22-7) in the first round, hoping to face either Purdue or High Point in the second round.

WASHINGTON IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT … Washington is the No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year and is making its 22nd all-time appearance. The Huskies won the title in 2005 and advanced to the national semifinal in 2013 for the fourth time in program history. UW boasts a 47-20 all-time record. If it wins, it could face fifth-seeded Nebraska or Stony Brook.

With 13 overall wins, the Bears reached double-digit wins for the first time since 2014 … COLORADO records its first 20-win season since 2014 and its 21 wins are the most since winning that many in 2003. Its 11 conference wins are the most since joining the Pac-12 in 2011 and are almost double its total from last year (6) … OREGON STATE is on the verge of recording its best season in team history. The Beavers currently tie for fifth in the Pac-12 standings heading into the final week. That would be its best showing since finishing fifth in 2001. The Beavs’ best finish ever was a third-place showing in 1990. OSU has posted a team record with 11 wins (tied with 11 in 1990) and its 21 wins are just the third time since the Pac-12 started sponsoring the sport that it has  had a 20-win campaign … STANFORD picked up its 10th Pac-12 win of the season, marking the 32nd season the Cardinal has won double-digit league matches. The Cardinal has also won at least 13 league wins every year since the Pac-12/10 became sponsoring women’s athletics (dating back to 1986). It has also had a 20-win campaign every year since 2000 … UCLA has recorded a 20-win season in each of the last four seasons and in 18 of the last 19 seasons … USC posted its 20 win campaign, making it more wins than all of last season (18). The Trojans have also won more league games than last year (10) … UTAH has recorded back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time since joining the Pac-12. The Huskies have won back-to-back regular-season crowns and three of the last four.

UW has three 2016 All-Americans on its current roster, while Stanford has two. Senior Adora Anae is also back for the Utes this year, as is Ducks junior Lindsey Vander Weide.

NEW COACHES … The Pac-12 welcomes four new coaches to the Conference this season. Sanja Tomasevic takes over the helm at ARIZONA STATE; Matt Ulmer roams the sidelines as head coach in Eugene; while Kevin Hambly takes over a Stanford program that is defending its national crown. Half the Pac-12 teams have put new coaches in place over the last two years, three due to retirement of long-time head coaches. Seven in total have coaches that have been at the helm for three years or less in the Pac-12.
