Roundup: Willie Taggart to FSU leaves Oregon with coaching vacancy

Oregon

Oregon is beginning the search for a new football coach following the departure of Willie Taggart Tuesday for Florida State. Offensive line coach Mario Cristobal will serve as the interim head coach in the Ducks' Las Vegas Bowl appearance on Dec. 16

Stanford

Former Stanford offensive coordinator Mike Bloomgren has been named the head coach at Rice, according to this release from RiceOwls.com. Well-deserved gig for Bloomgren.

Washington State

Washington State defensive lineman Hercules Mata’afa was named a finalist for Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award. Mata’afa led the Pac-12 with 21.5 tackles-for-loss.

Washington

Also, a finalist for Polynesian College Football Player of the Year was Vita Vea, who was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year on Tuesday.

UCLA

Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times updates us on Chip Kelly filling up his coaching staff at UCLA. He is apparently hiring Cal defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro to be the defensive coordinator and bringing in Don Pellum as the linebackers coach. Both of these guys worked for Kelly at Oregon.

California

Jared Anderson of Swimswam.com tells us that Cal men's swimming is the new No. 1 in the latest CSCAA poll that came out Wednesday morning. In the women's poll, Stanford leads the way among four Pac-12 schools at No. 2.

Arizona

Here’s Bruce Pascoe’s game recap of Arizona men’s basketball defeating No. 7 Texas A&M 67-64 in Phoenix Tuesday night, getting a late go-ahead three from Parker Jackson-Cartwright on a broken possession. This was a heck of a ballgame.

Utah

And here’s Lynn Worthy’s gamer from Utah men’s basketball losing at Butler 81-69 Tuesday night. The Bulldogs went on a 14-0 run in the second half to create separation.

Oregon State

Stephen Thompson Jr. scored 26 points to lead Oregon State men’s basketball to a 74-62 win over Eastern Kentucky Tuesday night in Corvallis, and here’s the Pac-12 Networks recap to prove it.

Colorado

Colorado women’s volleyball setter Brynna DeLuzio was named AVCA Pacific South Region Freshman of the Year, it was announced Tuesday. DeLuzio was one of 16 Pac-12 players earning all-region honors.

USC

Joey Kaufman of the Orange County Register reports that USC defensive lineman Liam Jimmons will not face criminal charges for shoving a Washington State fan after the Cougars’ 30-27 win over USC in Pullman in September.
