Stanford Men’s Soccer Three-Peats as National Champions, Pac-12’s 504th NCAA Title

SAN FRANCISCO – STANFORD men’s soccer made history on Sunday by capturing its third consecutive NCAA Championship to join Virginia (1991-94) as the only programs in the event’s 59-year history to accomplish the feat.

Stanford also made history by becoming the winningest program in Division I athletics with its 115th all-time national championship, as well as becoming the first school to win both the men’s and women’s Division I soccer crowns in the same season.

The Cardinal bested Indiana, 1-0, in double overtime in Sunday’s College Cup final to secure the Pac-12’s national-best third NCAA title of the 2017-18 campaign and 504th all-time. 

The Conference of Champions leads the list for the most NCAA titles by any league with the Big Ten at a distant second (307, based on current membership). Other conferences also do not come close to the number of men’s (299 vs. 215 - Big Ten), women’s (174 vs. 100 - SEC), and combined (30 vs. 21 - Big 12) NCAA titles in comparison to the Pac-12. Additionally, the 504 combined titles have come across 29 different sports.

No. 9-seeded Stanford (19-2-2) battled No. 2-seeded Indiana (18-1-6) through two scoreless halves and more than 12 minutes of overtime before redshirt junior Sam Werner netted the title-winning goal in the 103rd minute. The Cardinal extended its record streak of 12 straight College Cup matches without allowing a goal as redshirt senior goalkeeper Nico Corti and the Stanford defense posted their seventh consecutive and 14th total clean sheet of the season.

Stanford men’s soccer followed the tone set by two all-Pac-12 NCAA Championship affairs last weekend as Stanford edged UCLA, 3-2, in the women's soccer finale before UCLA posted a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over USC in the men's water polo title tilt.
