Pac-12 announces Tennis Players of the Week

Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week: Keegan Smith, Fr., UCLA (San Diego, Calif.)

Freshman Smith shined in his first ITA Indoor Championship helping UCLA advance to the finals and knock off three ranked opponents, including Seattle (7-0), No. 10 Illinois (4-2), No. 2 Ohio State (4-1), and No. 6 Texas A&M (4-2).

At the No. 1 and No. 3 singles position, Smith collected three singles victories, besting No 67–ranked Jordi Arconada of Texas A&M, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the ITA Indoors opener, Smith topped Alex Brown of Illinois, 7-6(8), 6-3, to give the seventh-seeded Bruins the lead that would uphold the remainder of the match. At the top court he won both sets against Seattle’s Trenton Nield, 7-5 and 6-1.

At the No. 2 Court, Smith teamed up with Austin Rapp to claim two doubles victories that was pivotal to the team’s success, clinching the opening point versus No. 2 Ohio State and No. 6 Texas A&M. The Bruins’ duo would go on to defeat the Aggies No. 67-ranked pair, 6-4, and topped Ohio State, 6-4.

Earns his first Pac-12 Tennis Player of the Week honor and UCLA’s 16 all-time weekly award.

Pac-12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week: Taylor Calton, Jr., Utah (Highland, Utah.)

Taylor Calton went 4-0 in both doubles and singles over the weekend and only lost one set in the last four matches. Calton’s eight victories helped Utah go undefeated, collecting four team wins against Utah State, 7-0, Denver, 4-3, Weber State, 4-1, and Boise State, 4-3.

At the No. 5 singles position, Calton defeated Utah State’s Sabrina Demerath, 6-2, 6-3, Denver’s Camille Verden-Anderson, 6-2, 6-2, and Boise State’s Vanessa Timm, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Recorded her first-career win at the No. 4 position over Morgan Dickason of Weber State, winning both sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Calton teamed up with Whitney Turley for a perfect week and opened up at the No. 2 position with a victory over Utah State, 6-1. On the No. 3 Court the pair earned three wins defeating Denver, 6-1, Weber State, 6-1, and Boise State 6-2.

Earns first career Pac-12 Player of the Week honor and Utah’s second all-time weekly nod since its first award in 2012.
