Oregon State Leads After Session 1 of Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship

Tucson, Ariz. — The 2018 Pac-12 Women’s Gymnastics Championships got underway this afternoon with lower seeds No. 5 OREGON STATE, No. 6 ARIZONA STATE, No. 7 STANFORD, and No. 8 ARIZONA competing in the first session at McKale Center on campus at University of Arizona. No. 5 seed OREGON STATE (196.575) came out on top at the end of Session 1, followed by ARIZONA STATE (196.425), STANFORD (196.350), and ARIZONA (195.825).
 
Oregon State’s Destinee Davis tied for the win on beam with Arizona State’s Ashley Szafranski and Arizona’s Victoria Ortiz, scoring a 9.875. Davis led her team on vault with a 9.850, and scored the highest for the Beavers on floor alongside Isis Lowery, posting a 9.850. Dani Dessaints topped the squad with a 9.900 on bars, the event which Oregon State received the highest marks on, tallying a 49.200 as a team. Singley was the only all-arounder for the Beavers, tallying 39.250.
 
In second place of Session 1 is Arizona State with a team score of 196.425. The Gym Devils are led by Cairo Leonard-Baker, Anne Kuhm and Szafranski– each of whom topped their team in scoring on their respective events. Leonard-Baker’s 9.900 on vault earned her a share of the gold with Stanford’s Elizabeth Price. Leonard-Baker also posted a 9.875 on bars and 9.900 on floor alongside Anne Kuhm, earning the highest marks in each event for Arizona State. Szafranski also earned a win on beam in a three-way tie. The Gym Devils had the highest team score on vault, with a 49.100. 
 
Stanford ended with a 196.350 to get third place in Session 1. The Cardinal squad is led by senior Elizabeth Price, who tied for first on vault (9.900), and took home the win on bars (9.975), floor (9.950), and in the all-around (39.650). Taryn Fitzgerald led the Cardinal on beam, scoring a 9.850. As a team, Stanford earned the top marks on floor with a score of 49.225. 
 
Host and No. 8 seed Arizona rounded out Session 1 with a total team score of 195.825. The Gym Cats performed best on beam, with a team score of 49.225, led by Victoria Ortiz who tied for first in the event with a score of 9.875. 
 
Each of the four competing teams had gymnasts take home the win in one of the four events, and each squad also took home the gold from their team scores in one event. 
 
Session 2 features the four higher seeds, including defending champion No. 2 UTAH and top seed UCLA. Also showcased in Session 2 will be seed No. 3 WASHINGTON, and No. 4 CALIFORNIA. Following session 2 the winner will be determined based off of the highest team score from both sessions. The action resumes at 6:00 p.m. PT and broadcast live on Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Now app, and appropriate regional channels.
