OJAI, Calif. – The 2018 Pac-12 Women’s Tennis Championship semifinals will feature top seeded STANFORD and three newcomers as No. 2 seed UCLA, No. 3 seed ARIZONA STATE and No. 5 seed WASHINGTON STATE all advanced from the quarterfinals at Ojai Valley Athletic Club and Weil Tennis Academy on Thursday.

In the second year of the women’s team championship, defending champion Stanford swept its quarterfinal match to continue its quest for a repeat title, while UCLA, ASU and WSU all fought through challenging matches to reach the semifinals for the first time.

Arizona State (16-6) dispatched of No. 6 seed USC (13-10), 4-2, thanks to the doubles point and straight-sets singles victories from Ilze Hattingh, Nicole Fossa Huergo and Savannah Slaysman on the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 courts, respectively.

WSU (21-6) knocked off No. 4 seed CALIFORNIA (11-9) for the second time this season in an epic 4-3 battle. The Cougars and Golden Bears went point-for-point for more than five hours, with the decisive match proving to be a marathon No. 4 singles affair between WSU’s Tiffany Mylonas and Cal’s Maria Smith.

Smith took the first set (6-3), but Mylonas squared the match with a 7-6 (5) win in the second set. The pair went back-and-forth in the third set, with Mylonas fighting back from a 4-2 deficit to force a tiebreak which she eventually won 7-6 (5).

UCLA (19-4) held off a singles rally from Oregon (15-9) after the Bruins secured the doubles point with wins on the Nos. 2 and 3 courts. The Ducks battled back to knot the match at 2-2 and 3-3 with victories from No. 2 Shweta Sangwan, No. 3 Julia Lilien and No. 4 Daniela Nasser.

The spot in the semifinals came down to the No. 5 court where Ayan Broomfield defeated Julia Eshet in straight sets (7-5, 6-4) to send UCLA through to the semis.

Stanford (16-3) quickly swept past Washington (16-11) with Janice Shin, Melissa Lord and Caroline Lampl posting singles victories as well as contributing to the doubles point.

Both of Friday’s semifinal matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. PT, with top seeded Stanford and No. 5 seed Washington State on the Weil courts and No. 2 seed UCLA and No. 3 Arizona State at OVAC.

The winners will advance to Saturday’s final to be played at Libbey Park and broadcast live starting at 12:00 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Los Angeles. Full coverage of the Pac-12 Tennis Championships can be found at pac-12.com/tennischamps.
