UCLA, USC to meet again for Pac-12 Men’s Tennis title

Apr 27, 2018

OJAI, Calif. – The 2018 Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championship will feature a rematch between Los Angeles rivals No. 1 seed UCLA and No. 3 seed USC for the second straight year and fifth time in tournament history. The Bruins swept past No. 4 seed OREGON and the Trojans blanked No. 2 seed STANFORD in Friday's semifinals to set up Saturday's showdown.

The Bruins and Trojans are the only two teams to capture a Pac-12 Championship trophy and both programs will look to win their fourth crown in seven years of the team-style tournament established in 2012. The winner receives the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.

Top seed and No. 2 nationally ranked UCLA (25-2) secured its spot in the championship match with a sweep over No. 4 seed OREGON. Doubles play was knotted 1-1 with the decisive point falling on the No. 2 court as the Bruin duo of Austin Rapp and Keegan Smith won the tiebreaker, 7-6. Smith kept the momentum going in singles with a win on the No. 3 court in straight sets (6-1, 6-4). Connor Hance collected the victory on court six (6-1, 6-4) and three-time Pac-12 Player of the Week Maxime Cressy ultimately sent the Bruins to the final defending the No. 5 court. The battle on the top court featured an ITA top-25 matchup between UCLA’s Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and No.1 ranked Martin Redlicki and Oregon’s No. 22 Thomas Laurent that was abandoned in the second set (4-6, 3-2).

No. 3 USC (17-7) captured a dominating 4-0 victory over No. 2 STANFORD. The Trojans made quick work of the doubles point on the top two courts from two ITA top-10 ranked pairs. The duo of No. 7-ranked Jack Jaede and Laurens Verboven claimed the first win on court No. 2 (6-2) while the No. 9-ranked Brandon Holt and Riley Smith clinched the point by a similar 6-2 score. Verboven closed out court No. 3 (6-1, 6-0) for a 2-0 advantage to set the tone for the singles matches. USC finished off the semis behind wins from Daniel Cukierman at No. 3 and Riley Smith on court six. No. 12 nationally ranked USC will be in familiar territory entering the championship match as USC knocked off both the No. 2 seed (CALIFORNIA) and No. 1 seed (UCLA) en route to the 2017 Pac-12 title.

The Pac-12 Men’s Tennis Championship on Saturday will take place at Libbey Park in Ojai Calif., and will be broadcast live at 3 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles. Full coverage can be found at pac-12.com/tennischamps.
