SAN FRANCISCO - The 2018 Pac-12 Conference Track & Field Championships will begin this Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6 with the Combined Events hosted at Stanford University's Cobb Track & Angell Field. The full Championships will take place in Stanford the following weekend, May 12-13.

It marks the first time STANFORD has hosted the Pac-12 title meet since 2007, and the fourth time on The Farm since the addition of the women’s meet in 1987.

A total of 25 athletes are slated to compete in the multis - 10 in the men's decathlon and 15 in the women's heptathlon - with events slated to begin at 12 p.m. PT on Saturday and 11 a.m. PT on Sunday. The order of the combined events is subject to change.

HEPTATHLON PREVIEW

Fifteen competitors will look to capture the heptathlon title at this weekend’s 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Combined Events Championship.

Fourteen of them will be chasing defending and two-time champion and NCAA All-American Alissa Brooks-Johnson of WASHINGTON STATE. Already one of nine multiple winners of the event, Brooks-Johnson, who won titles in 2015 and 2017 around a redshirt season in 2016, will look to become only the fifth three-time champion in the Conference’s heptathlon history.

Brooks-Johnson enters with the league’s best heptathlon mark of the season - a 5,740 at the Bryan Clay Invitational, good for eighth-best in the NCAA this season. The Pac-12’s top five is rounded out by UCLA’s Kendall Gustafson (5,691, 12th), ARIZONA’s Alyssa Thompson (5,596, 13th), USC’s Lyndsey Lopes (5,574, 16th) and COLORADO’s Maja Wichhart-Donzo (5,433, 27th), all posting top-30 national marks this seaosn.

Gustafson (4,084) edged third-place Brooks-Johnson (4,040) by just 44 points for the MPSF pentathlon crown in February.

DECATHLON PREVIEW

Eight of the 10 entries into the men’s decathlon will be making their Pac-12 Track & Field Combined Events Championship debuts this weekend.

The lone returning competitors are STANFORD’s Harrison Williams, a two-time NCAA decathlon All-American who will compete at Pac-12’s for the first time since finishing runner-up in 2015, and COLORADO’s Andrew Ghizzone, who is making his fourth consecutive Pac-12 decathlon appearance.

Only six Pac-12 athletes have registered a decathlon score so far this season, led by the Cardinal’s Williams, whose 7,682 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in April is the highest for a Conference athlete since Williams (8,032) was edged by ARIZONA’s Pau Tonnesen (8,103) at the 2016 NCAA National Championship. Williams’ 7,682 is good for ninth-best nationally entering the weekend.

Ghizzone, who is second in the Pac-12 with a season-best decathlon score of 7,083, is poised for a career-best showing at the Conference’s combined meet. He has risen from 11th in 2015 to 10th in 2016 to fifth last spring.

Ghizzone (5,519) captured the heptathlon at the MPSF indoor championships this past February, defeating the likes of upcoming Pac-12 decathlon competitors Martin Moldau (4,837) of WASHINGTON STATE, Jack Herkert (4,420) of STANFORD, and Buffaloes’ teammate Davis Butte (4,617) in the event.
