SAN FRANCISCO — Justin Suh of USC was named the Pac-12 Men’s Golfer of the Year, teammate Kaito Onishi was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, and CALIFORNIA coach Walter Chun was tabbed Pac-12 Coach of the Year in a voting by the Pac-12 men’s golf coaches. In addition, the 2018 All-Pac-12 Men’s Golf Team as selected by the coaches was announced.
Suh, who hails from San Jose, Calif., becomes the ninth recipient of the Conference’s Golfer of the Year honor in school history, and first since 2009. He posted top four finishes in eight of 10 events, including five victories – Trinity Forest Invitational (-10), Saint Mary’s Invitational (-13), Amer Ari Invitational (-13), Southern Highlands Collegiate (-8), and Pac-12 Championships (-16). Suh is a semifinalist for the Hogan Award and the Jack Nicklaus Award, both given annually to the nation’s top collegiate golfer. Of his 30 rounds played this season, he has 20 rounds under 70 this season, 22 rounds under par and 26 of par or better. He’s currently second in the nation in stroke average (69.27).
Onishi, from Bradenton, Fla., not only earned Pac-12 Freshman of the Year honors, but also was tabbed all-conference honorable mention. He becomes the seventh Trojan to be named Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. Onishi posted a 71.53 stroke average over 10 events, with a top finish of second at the Saint Mary’s Invitational where he shot 8-under. He finished tied for 13th at the Pac-12 Championships where he posted a score of 4-under to help the Trojans capture the team title.
Chun, earns his first Pac-12 Coach of the Year honor. He joins Steve Desimone (1987, 2012, 2103) as the only other California coach to have earned the honor. In his second year as head coach, he has guided the Bears to a Top-10 ranking (No. 5 Golfweek, No. 9 Golfstat) and eight top 3 finishes. California posted three wins during the season – Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Tavistock Collegiate Invitational and the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Under Chun’s guidance, three Golden Bears earned all-conference honors, including junior Collin Morikawa, who is currently ranked second in the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
The Pac-12 golf awards and the All-Pac-12 Team are voted on by the Conference head golf coaches.
