STANFORD, Calif. – STANFORD senior Harrison Williams holds a sizable advantage in the decathlon and WASHINGTON STATE redshirt senior Alissa Brooks-Johnson leads in her quest for a Conference record-tying third heptathlon title through Saturday’s first day of the 2018 Pac-12 Track & Field Championships combined events at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.

Brooks-Johnson recorded personal-bests and finished second in all four of Saturday’s events – 100-meter hurdles (13.68), high jump (1.74m/5-8.5), shot put (12.55m/41-2.25) and wind-aided 200-meter dash (24.40w) – en route to a lifetime-best first day of 3,568 points to grab a narrow five-point lead on UCLA senior Kendall Gustafson (3,563) in the heptathlon.

Gustafson won the high jump (1.80m/5-10.75) and shot put (13.08m/42-11) to keep pace with Brooks-Johnson, whom Gustafson edged for the MPSF indoor pentathlon crown in February.

Brooks-Johnson, who is the league’s defending as well as 2015 champion, will look to hold off Gustafson for a third Pac-12 heptathlon title which would equal the most in Conference history along with STANFORD’s Tracye Lawyer (1997-99), ARIZONA STATE’s Jacquelyn Johnson (2004, 2006, 2008), OREGON’s Brianne Theisen (2009-10, 2012) and former Cougar Ellannee Richardson (2001-03).

USC junior Lyndsey Lopes, who won the 200 and 100 hurdles on Saturday, is close behind in third with 3,471 points, followed by ARIZONA senior Alyssa Thompson in fourth (3,232) and COLORADO junior Maja Wichhart-Donzo in fifth (3,226).

The heptathlon concludes on Sunday with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run. The women’s events begin at 11:45 a.m. PT.

Williams, whose season-best decathlon total of 7,682 entering the Pac-12 Championships was 599 points better than the next best competitor, similarly surged to a large lead after five events of the 10-event competition. Williams rolled up 4,071 points at his home facility on Saturday, building a 472-point cushion on second place Andrew Ghizzone (3,599) of COLORADO.

Williams won the long jump (7.23m/23-8.75), high jump (1.96m/6-5), shot put (13.71m/44-11.75) and 400-meter dash (48.67), and finished second in the 100-meter dash (11.06) to amass 4,071 points.

Williams is on pace to become the first athlete to reach the 8,000-point plateau at the Pac-12 Championships since 2013 winner Dakotah Keys of OREGON (8,001). He’s also seeking to become only the second Cardinal to win the Conference’s decathlon crown alongside Travis Clark in 1994.

The decathlon concludes on Sunday with the 100-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500-meter run. Events begin at 11 a.m. PT.
