SAN FRANCISCO - Pac-12 members will have over 300 combined entries to compete at the 2018 NCAA West Preliminaries May 24-26 at Sacramento State University’s Hornet Stadium with their sights set on qualifying for the NCAA Championships to be held next month at Oregon's historic Hayward Field.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS QUALIFICATION
Qualifying to the NCAA final championships competition is accomplished through performance at the regional (East and West) competitions for events contested at those competitions. Twelve competitors from each individual events and 12 teams from each relay event advance from each regional to the final championships in Eugene. Qualifcation through competition in an event at the regional meets is required to participate in that event at the final national championships. The NCAA East Regional is being hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
>> Heptathletes and decathletes who have achieved qualifying marks received an automatic bid into the national championships in those events. There is no multis competition at the regional meets.
NCAA WEST PRELIMS - WOMEN'S PREVIEW
Nearly 190 women’s individual entries and relay teams from the Pac-12 are slated to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries Round May 24-26 at Sacramento State University’s Hornet Stadium.
In total, Pac-12 athletes will boast 189 women’s event entries at the West Prelims (179 individual, 10 relays), with No. 3 nationally ranked OREGON leading the league and second-best in the nation with 31 (29 plus two relays). No. 7 STANFORD (27 + 1 relay) is second with 28 while Conference champion and No. 1 nationally ranked USC is third with 24 (22 + 2 relays). COLORADO will have 19 combined entries (18 + 1 relay).
Pac-12 athletes enter the regional meet with 76 marks inside the top-12 in the West Region, including 35 inside the top-5 and 10 region-leading marks. Leading the way is Arizona State’s Bowerman candidate Maggie Ewen, the national leader in the discus and collegiate-record setter in the shot put and hammer.
USC’s Twanisha Terry (100), Kendall Ellis (400) and 4x100 meter relay, Oregon’s Makenzie Dunmore (200), Jessica Hull (1,500) and Chaquinn Cook (triple jump), and Stanford’s Mackenzie Little (javelin) also own West Region leading marks.
The Pac-12 boasts at least half of the top-12 preliminaries qualifiers in four events - eight in the 1,500 paced by Hull, seven in the 200 led by Dunmore, and six in both the 5,000-meter run, highlighted by Stanford’s Vanessa Fraser’s second-best in the west mark, and the Ewen-led shot put.
The Pac-12 will boast four of the 24 entries in the NCAA heptathlon, led by three-time league champion Alissa Brooks-Johnson (5,977) of Washington State who will enter with the No. 4 ranked score on the national performance list. Joining Brooks-Johnson will be UCLA’s Kendall Gustafson (8th, 5,886), Arizona’s Alissa Thompson (14th, 5,761) and USC’s Lyndsey Lopes (17th, 5,719).

NCAA WEST PRELIMS - MEN'S PREVIEW
Nearly 150 men’s individual entires and relay teams from the Pac-12 are slated to compete at the NCAA West Preliminaries Round May 24-26 at Sacramento State University’s Hornet Stadium.
In total, the Pac-12 will boast 148 men’s event entries at the West Prelims (138 individual, 10 relays), with No. 6 nationally ranked and 12-time defending Pac-12 champion OREGON pacing the league and tied for the most in the NCAA as a team with 29 (27 plus two relays). STANFORD is second with 19 (17 + 2 relays), ARIZONA is third with 16 (14 + 2 relays) and No. 10 USC (13 + 2 relays) is fourth with 15.
Pac-12 athletes enter the regional meet with 43 marks inside the top-12 in the West Region, including 20 inside the top-5 and four region-leading marks - USC’s Bowerman candidate duo of Michael Norman, in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes, and Rai Benjamin, in the 400-meter hurdles, as well as Oregon’s Damarcus Simpson in the long jump. Norman, however, will only individually compete in the 400 at the West Regionals.
The Pac-12 looks to be exceptionally strong in the 1,500-meter run with six athletes in the top-12 in the west led by Conference meet champion Sam Prakel of Oregon. The league also boasts four in the top-12 in both the shot put, highlighted by Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Jordan Geist’s No. 2 mark in the region, and the hammer throw, behind Washington State’s Brock Eager.
Stanford's Harrison Williams (7,925) is the first Pac-12 athlete to qualify for the NCAA National Championships as his Conference title winning score placed him sixth on the decathlon’s national performance list.
