NCAA Men's Golf Championships: ASU leads Pac-12 contingent after 2nd round

Arizona State is in a tie for 13th to lead the group of four Pac-12 teams competing at the NCAA Men's Golf Championships at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma. After Sunday's round, the field of 30 teams will be cut down to 15, along with the lowest nine individuals on non-qualifying teams, for the final round of stroke play on Monday. The lowest eight teams after four rounds of stroke play advance to the match-play portion of the championships beginning Tuesday.

Texas Tech (-5) has a one-stroke lead over Oklahoma State (-4) atop the team leaderboard after two rounds.

Arizona State

Perhaps buoyed by a hell-hath-no-fury-esque chat from coach Matt Thurmond after Friday's round, the Sun Devils were seven strokes better on Saturday, registering a 1-over 289 to get to 9 over for the championship. That allowed Arizona State to move up nine spots into a four-way tie for 13th with North Carolina, Arkansas and BYU. That's the cut line for now, so Arizona State will need a solid round on Sunday to advance to Monday. Chun An Yu again provided the fireworks for the Sun Devils, shooting a 2-under 70 to get to 5 under after 36 holes, good for a seven-way tie for second and one stroke behind Auburn's Brandon Mancheno for the lead. Alex del Rey provided the second-lowest round of the day for ASU with an even-par 72 for the second consecutive day. You're going to have to get up early in Arizona if you want to follow along live with the Sun Devils' quest to clinch a top-15 spot, as Arizona State beings its third round at 6:50 a.m. PT.

Stanford

Two strokes behind Arizona State is Stanford at 11 over after a 7-over 295 on Saturday placed it in 18th and two shots out of the top 15. Brandon Wu couldn't back up a 3-under 69 well enough, shooting 10-over 82 (a 10 on the par-4 10th certainly didn't help matters), but luckily for Stanford, that score did not count for the team total. Instead, Isaiah Salinda led the way with a 3-under 69 that has him in a tie for ninth at 4 under overall. Unfortunately for the Card, Franklin Huang is the only other Stanford golfer inside the top 90 on the player leaderboard (tied for 89th at 6 over after a Saturday 74). Stanford hits the links at high noon central time on Sunday (10 a.m. PT).

UCLA

UCLA was two strokes higher on Saturday, carding a 9-over 297 that has it at 16 over. That score has the Bruins in a tie for 23rd with Iowa State and seven shots off the current cut line for the top 15, so it'll take a stellar Sunday to advance. Dropping three spots from their first-round finish, the Bruins got a pair of even-par rounds from Cole Madey, who remained at 2 under, and Hidetoshi Yoshihara, who is still at 5 over. UCLA will start its Sunday round at 10:55 a.m. PT.

Oregon

Last and Pac-12 least is Oregon, which is 28th place at 20 over after a 12-over 300 on Saturday. While 11 strokes may be too much to make for the Ducks, Sunday might be the penultimate round for Norman Xiong, who is tied for 19th at 2 under after carding a 2-over 74. Edwin Yi had the low round of the day for Oregon with an even-par 72 to stay at 3 over for the championship. The Ducks will tee off at 11:17 a.m. PT on Sunday.

Arizona

Arizona's George Cunningham was three strokes better for his second round, checking into the clubhouse with a 1-over 73 that has him at 5 over for the regional. Probably looking at his last round on Sunday since he is currently tied for 77th, Cunningham posted two birdies on the front nine and back nine apiece. He will start his third round on the 10th hole, teeing off at 7:12 a.m. PT.
