NCAA Baseball Regionals: Washington, UCLA, Oregon State, Stanford claim opening round wins

The Pac-12's four postseason teams — Oregon State, UCLA, Washington, Stanford — started their journeys to the College World Series on Friday, when action in the NCAA Regional round began across the country. See which teams picked up wins on the first day of postseason play by following along. This page will be updated as more games go final throughout the day.

Oregon State

Corvallis Regional: Oregon State 9, Northwestern State 3

The Beavers sent Bryce Fehmel to the mound to start their 2018 postseason, and the right-hander delivered. He spun 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball while allowing just six hits during his apperance. 

Nick Madrigal, likely a first-round pick in next week's MLB Draft, went 3 for 5 on the day with a pair of RBIs. 

The Beavers scored two unearned runs in the third when Steven Kwan and Jack Anderson both scored after a Northwestern State fielding error extended the inning. The home team tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Kyle Nobach went yard for the 18th time this season. Michael Gretler had walked just before Nobach's at-bat, making the big fly even more powerful.

In the sixth, Oregon State padded its lead with four runs. Madrigal's hit was the biggest of the bunch, a double that plated two runs. Before Madrigal's clutch at-bat, Trevor Larnach and Anderson each scored runs as part of the big inning. 

Zak Taylor went yard in the eighth to make it 9-3 Beavers after the Demons plated runs in the seventh and eight innings to chase Fehmel from the game.

With the win, Oregon State will face LSU on Saturday at 7 p.m. PT.

Stanford

Stanford Regional: Stanford 4, Wright State 3 (13 innings)

Tristan Beck put up another strong outing, but Wright State lifted a two-run homer in the seventh inning, setting up a down-to-the-wire finish in the Cardinal's opening game of their regional Friday.

Christian Robinson was the game's hero, delivering a walk-off hit in the 13th inning to score Andrew Daschbach and end the marathon game.

Wright State knotted up the game in the game in the seventh with a run-scoring single and an unearned run on a wild pitch, and Stanford was unable to scratch out any runs with rallies in the 10th and 12th innings.

Beck earned the start and pieced together 6 1/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing just five hits while striking out seven. The junior allowed a run in the first, but Stanford responded with two in the bottom half of the inning. Beau Branton scored on a single from Nico Hoerner, who went on to score as well on a wild pitch.

The Cardinal tacked on another run in the fifth when Tim Tawa singled in Alex Wilson, who began the inning with a double.

UCLA

Minneapolis Regional: UCLA 6, Gonzaga 5

An incredible ninth-inning rally kept the Bruins in the winners' bracket of Minnesota's regional on Friday. UCLA erased a three-run deficit with four runs to walk off against Gonzaga in thrilling fashion.

Chase Strumpf scored the game-winning run on a sac fly from Jake Pries, who had entered the game as a pinch hitter earlier in the contest. Ryan Kreidler got the late rally started when he was hit by a pitch and RJ Teijeiro doubled. After a ground out, a single and back-to-back doubles set up the Bruins with a chance to steal the win.

UCLA starter Jake Bird was strong for the Bruins, lasting 7 2/3 innings while allowing four runs and six hits. He departed when the Bruins trailed 4-2, and the Zags added another run in the eighth on a wild pitch to pad their lead.  

Strumpf had a team-high two hits, and Pries tallied two RBIs for UCLA, which advances to face Minnesota on Saturday at 5 p.m. PT.

Washington

Conway, South Carolina Regional: Washington 7, UConn 1

This battle of Huskies went to the team from Seattle's way thanks in part to a dominating performance from UW ace Joe DeMers. The right-hander settled in after allowing a run in the first, holding UConn hitless from the second to fifth innings.

In total, DeMers' line was worthy of celebration: 107 pitches, eight innings, six hits, six strikeouts and just one walk.

Joe Wainhouse delivered the go-ahead hit by breaking a 1-1 tie for UW when he went yard for the 15th time this season during the sixth inning. UW got its first run of the game in the second inning when reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week Levi Jordan doubled and AJ Graffanino brought him home with an RBI single.

The Huskies hailing from Montlake blew the game open in the eighth with a five-run output. UW battled around the order and jumpstarted the rally by drawing two walks against UConn reliever Jacob Wallace.

Jordan and Graffanino both finished 3 for 5 for UW.

Washington now faces Coastal Carolina in a game that will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. PT.
