Pac-12 set with 128 entries for 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships

SAN FRANCISCO - The Pac-12 will have more than 100 athletes scheduled for a total of 128 event entries in 42 events at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, to be held at Oregon’s historic Hayward Field for the sixth consecutive year this Wed.-Sat., June 6-9. The Conference will be seeking its 48th all-time men’s title and ninth all-time women’s title following the host Ducks’ historic triple crown last spring.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS - PAC-12 WOMEN'S PREVIEW

The Pac-12 will be represented in all 21 women’s events and by all 12 schools at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In total, the league will have 78 event entries - 71 individual events and seven relay teams.

No. 2 nationally ranked USC and No. 3 OREGON lead the Pac-12 and the nation with 19 event entries apiece, a full five clear of the next closest program. The Trojans ended the Ducks’ nine-year reign as Conference champions in May, but Oregon enters the NCAA meet as the defending titlists after edging USC in the 4x400 relay finale to secure the historic triple crown. This budding intra-league rivalry could wind up yielding a ninth all-time NCAA women’s title for the Pac-12.

Eleven Pac-12 women athletes are entered in multiple individual events, including a combined seven between the Trojans (five) and Ducks (two). UCLA freshman Alyssa Wilson (shot put/discus/hammer) is the only Pac-12 athlete in three events, while Bowerman candidate Maggie Ewen (shot put/discus) and Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Twanisha Terry (100/200) headline the list of dual qualifiers.

Ewen (hammer, 2017) and Oregon’s Ariana Washington (100 & 200, 2016) and 4x400-meter relay are returning NCAA event champions from the Pac-12.

NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS - PAC-12 MEN'S PREVIEW

The Pac-12 will be represented in all 21 men’s events at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. In total, the league will have 50 event entries - 46 individual events and four relay teams.

The Pac-12’s top representative is also the league’s highest ranked program with host and No. 6 OREGON securing 11 event entries in the national meet. The 12-time defending Conference champion Ducks will be searching for their first national crown since claiming back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015.

No. 11 USC, headed by Bowerman candidates Michael Norman and Rai Benjamin, has nine entries, while ARIZONA, led by Pac-12 Freshman of the Year Jordan Geist, and No. 17 STANFORD both have seven entries.

Geist (shot put/discus), CALIFORNIA’s McKay Johnson (shot put/discus) and Oregon’s Cravon Gillespie (100/200) are the lone Pac-12 male athletes to qualify in multiple individual events.

Stanford’s Grant Fisher (5,000-meter run) is the lone Pac-12 male athlete back to defend a national title.

CONFERENCE OF CHAMPIONS...AGAIN

For the 13th consecutive season and 52nd time in the past 58 years, the Pac-12 Conference will rank atop the nation for total NCAA national championships. The Pac-12 enters the NCAA Track & Field Championships with 10 total NCAA national titles in 2017-18, outpacing the next closest leagues by more than double (SEC 4, ACC 3, Big 12 3).

The Conference also has a finalist in the Women's College World Series (Washington) and two teams in Super Regionals of the NCAA Baseball Championship (Oregon State, Washington).

This year’s 10 crowns brings the league’s all-time total to 511, more than 200 better than the next-closest league (Big Ten - 309), cementing the Pac-12’s status as the Conference of Champions.
