Roundup: Maggie Ewen adds to her already decorated career with Honda Sport Award for Track & Field

Arizona State

Don't you love when good things happen to good people? ASU redshirt senior Maggie Ewen was named the Honda Sport Award Winner for Track & Field, it was announced Wednesday morning. Ewen capped her collegiate career in Eugene at NCAAs with a pair of titles in shot put and discus. 

California

Cal first baseman Andrew Vaughn was named the Perfect Game/Rawlings Player of the Year on Wednesday (San Francisco Chronicle). The Pac-12 Player of the Year hit .402 with 23 homers in 2018 and is one of four finalists for the Golden Spikes Award.

Washington

Tim Booth of the Associated Press writes about Washington baseball making its first College World Series appearance. The Dawgs were 18-18 at one point in the season before turning things around in the final month of the regular season.

Oregon

Oregon men’s basketball coach Dana Altman will be inducted into the Creighton Athletics Hall of Fame, Tyson Alger of The Oregonian/OregonLive reports. Altman, the all-time wins leader at Creighton (327-176, seven NCAA Tournaments), will be inducted August 25.

USC

USC’s Michael Norman was named Men’s Track Athlete of the Year by the USTFCCCA on Wednesday. Norman won the NCAA title in the 400-meter dash and was part of the winning 4x400m relay squad. Meanwhile, Caryl Smith Gilbert was named Women’s Coach of the Year and Quincy Watts was named Men’s Assistant Coach of the Year.

Stanford

Stanford swimmer Katie Ledecky was named the Google Cloud At-Large Division I Academic All-American of the Year by CoSIDA on Thursday. In addition to her exploits in the pool, Ledecky is rocking a 3.99 GPA as a psychology major.

Washington State

Former Washington State pitcher Parker McFadden signed with the Baltimore Orioles for $125,000, according to Jim Callis of MLB.com and linked here by CougCenter. The Birds drafted McFadden in the 16th round.

Colorado

Colorado men’s hoops will play Colorado State in Boulder next season, Pat Rooney reports. The contract isn’t finalized yet, but there was some initial concern from Buffs head coach Tad Boyle about playing the Rams due to RPI considerations and attendance issues.

Arizona

Jon Wilner takes a deep dive into Arizona football facilities upgrades. He notes that the west side of Arizona Stadium needs to be renovated, and it’s gonna cost a lot of money.

UCLA

Nooooooo – the Los Angeles Lakers have asked Lonzo Ball and Kyle Kuzma to tone down their playful jabs at each other on social media. I guess Lonzo Ball’s “Kylie Kuzma” diss track was a bridge too far.

Oregon State

Oregon State baseball’s Luke Heimlich was named the National Pitcher of the Year, it was announced Wednesday. The southpaw struck out 151 batters in 120.1 innings pitched. The Beavers open College World Series play Saturday against North Carolina.

Utah

Considering the 51-game sellout streak the Utes have going that dates back to 2010, putting a few thousand more seats in Rice-Eccles seems like a pretty, pretty, pretty good idea.
