Oregon State

A day after Luke Heimlich won National Pitcher of the Year honors, Oregon State junior Cadyn Grenier won the 2018 Brooks Wallace Award, which goes annually to the top shortstop in college. The Beavs begin College World Series play against North Carolina, the team they defeated in the CWS finals in back-to-back years in 2006 and 2007 to win it all.

Washington

The Seattle Times columnist Larry Stone writes about Washington baseball coach Lindsey Meggs’ “tough love” style on the eve of the Huskies’ first-ever College World Series game against Mississippi State.

California

Cal football incoming freshman linebacker Chris Fatulia suffered a serious spinal cord injury on Tuesday (Associated Press). “He is receiving treatment for his injury and his long-term prognosis is unknown at this time,” his family said in a statement Thursday.

Arizona State

Arizona State men’s basketball will play Mississippi State at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the semis of the MGM Resorts Main Event. Utah State and Saint Mary’s are the other two teams that will be in attendance.

Colorado

Colorado lacrosse’s Julia Lisella was named the IWLCA Goalkeeper of the Year on Thursday. Not bad for a first-year starting keeper.

Arizona

As Arizona Desert Swarm points out (and originally reported by The Oregonian), Deandre Ayton is nearing an endorsement deal with Puma. This is shaping up to be a helluva draft class for Puma, which is also reportedly inking Marvin Bagley (I didn’t know they still made shoes).

UCLA

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports writes that former UCLA linebacker Myles Jack is on track to be the “next breakout star” for the Jacksonville Jaguars. There are ice cream flavors and beers in Jacksonville named Myles Jack Wasn’t Down after his forced fumble (and ensuing recovery) against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game in January that he ran back for a touchdown was disallowed when the refs ruled that he was down. That touchdown would have put the Jags up by at least 16 points early in the fourth quarter…maybe it’s a different result if Jack scores that TD?

Oregon

Andrew Greif reports that the Oregon Club of Portland is closing operations due to financial reasons. The booster and fundraising organization for Oregon athletics has been around for 72 years.

USC

Well, how about this? USC student-athletes posted an average GPA of 2.95 for the spring term, which is tied for the second highest department-wide GPA since the data was first tracked in 2000.

Utah

Utah baseball outfielder DaShawn Keirsey was named ABCA/Rawlings All-Region on Wednesday. Keirsey, a fourth-round selection of the Minnesota Twins last week, hit .386 for the Utes this season.

Washington State
