Roundup: Former Stanford hooper Reid Travis transfers to Kentucky

Stanford

Former Stanford men’s basketball forward Reid Travis is transferring to Kentucky, he announced on a video he released on Twitter Wednesday (Myron Medcalf of ESPN with the story). Travis averaged 19.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last year with the Cardinal.

Oregon State

Another elimination game for Oregon State baseball at the College World Series, and Ken Goe writes that the Beavers “need another total team effort” when it plays North Carolina on Wednesday (4 p.m. PT, ESPN). The Beavs lost to the Heels 8-6 in their first game at the CWS this year.

Oregon

Tyson Alger reports that Pedro Chavarin Jr., the driver in the crash that killed former Oregon football player Fotu Leitao, was arrested on Tuesday on first-degree manslaughter charges. He had already been charged with DUII following the crash Friday morning.

Jeff Eisenberg, Pat Forde and Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports detail Deandre Ayton’s path through amateur hoops to the NBA Draft. There was certainly a lot of drama that Ayton had to deal with.

UCLA

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher and former Bruin Trevor Bauer is suing a trainer in Louisiana for using his likeness and image on his website. The accused, Brent Pourciau, owns and runs the training academy TopVelocity.

Arizona State

Phil Mickelson is “embarrassed and disappointed” by his putting fiasco Saturday at the U.S. Open last weekend, he said in a statement Wednesday (USA TODAY). On Saturday, the Sun Devil great hit a moving ball during a missed bogey putt on the 13th hole and was assessed a two-stroke penalty.

Utah

Utah kicker Matt Gay and punter Mitch Wishnowsky were named first-team Preseason All-Americans by Athlon. The Utes’ special teams game is always on point.

California

Cal men’s basketball announced its nonconference schedule on Tuesday. The Golden Bears will travel more than 18,000 miles, playing Yale in China in addition to trekking to Brooklyn. St. John’s and San Diego State are the most intriguing names on the schedule, with the possibility of playing VCU or Temple in Brooklyn also up there.

Washington

Barton Simmons of CBS Sports believes that Washington football has the best quarterback room in the country heading into the 2018 season with Jake Browning starting and Georgia transfer Jacob Eason slated to start the next two years.

Colorado

Pat Rooney features Colorado men’s basketball’s Shane Gatling, a junior-college transfer who figures to be a perimeter threat for the Buffs. Indian Hills Community College has produced some good dudes over the years.

Washington State

Washington State women’s basketball will have a new identity for the 2018-19 season with a new coaching staff at the helm, led by head coach Kamie Ethridge (WSUCougars.com).

USC

The folks at Sports Illustrated believe USC linebacker Cameron Smith is the 16th-best player in college football. Smith was second in the Pac-12 in tackles last year with 112.
