Three Earn Academic All-America Honors

Apr 24, 2024

THREE CARDINAL HAVE been named Academic All-Americans for men's swimming and diving by the College Sports Communicators.

Ron Polonsky was named to the first team for the second consecutive year, and Luke Maurer is a repeat on the second team. This is the first selection for Rick Mihm, who was named to the second team.

Polonsky, a junior computer science major from Haifa, Israel, earned five All-America honors at the NCAA Championships last month. He was first team in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, and 800 freestyle relay, and second team in the 200 individual medley.

He set a school record in the 100 breaststroke (50.87) in the NCAA trials and placed eighth in the NCAA A final. During the regular season, Polonsky broke the Avery Aquatic Center record in the 100 breast (51.39).

He is a 2020 Olympian for Israel and recently broke the national record in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:00.24).

Maurer, a senior economics major from Wilmette, Illinois, was a two-time All-American this season. He earned first-team honors in the 800 free relay and was second team in the 200 free relay. Maurer is a 14-time All-American. He appears on Stanford's all-time top-15 lists in four individual events, including No. 3 in the 200 free, and is a school-record holder in the 800 free and 400 medley relays.

Mihm, a senior economics major from Wexford, Pennsylvania, raced at the NCAA Championships in the 200 IM and 400 IM, placing 18th and 26th, respectively. At the Pac-12 Championships, Mihm placed fourth in the 200 IM and eighth in the 400 IM – his best conference finishes.

Mihm ranks No. 5 all-time at Stanford in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, and No. 8 in the 200 butterfly.

This is the third year that men's swimming and diving has had its own Academic All-America category. Previously, the sport was under "At-large." Overall, 15 different Stanford men's swimmers and divers have earned 23 Academic All-America honors.
