Bears Battle Cardinal On The Farm

The Bears battle the Cardinal on the Farm for a three-game series starting Friday.

BERKELEY – The California baseball team remains on the road for the middle stretch of its season-long seven-game homestand when the Golden Bears make the short trip to the peninsula to take on rival Stanford for a three-game Pac-12 series beginning Friday at 6:05 p.m. All three games this weekend will be televised on Pac-12 Bay Away with Ben Ross calling the action.
 
Cal (25-14, 11-10 Pac-12) is in the midst of a nine-game winning streak, its longest such streak since winning 10 in a row in 2015. On Tuesday night, the Bears defeated host Pacific 12-3 to improve to 7-5 on the road this season.
 
Stanford (17-21, 9-9) lost its nonconference contest against WCC rival Santa Clara on Tuesday night, falling to the Broncos 4-2 on the road. Prior to that, the Cardinal took two of three from #16 Oregon at Sunken Diamond.

  • The Bears extended their winning streak to nine games with a 12-3 win on the road over Pacific on Tuesday. The Bears are 11 games over .500 for the first time since Cal finished the 2019 season with a record of 32-20.
  • Cal swept then-No. 5 Oregon State in a three-game series last weekend at Stu Gordeon Stadium. It was the Bears' first sweep over a top-5 team since sweeping OSU in March 2016.
  • Cal has swept three Pac-12 series in 2024 – the most since the Bears swept Washington State, Arizona State, and USC in 2017.
  • The Bears' nine-game winning streak is the longest such streak since the Bears won 10 in a row between Feb. 28-March 14, 2015. Cal's six-game winning streak in Pac-12 play is the longest since winning seven in a row against Pac-12 foes in 1981.
  • The Bears are hitting .292 (391-for-1341) as a team and averaging 7.1 runs per game. On the road, the Bears are hitting .306 (135-for-441) as a team and averaging 8.5 runs per contest. Catcher Caleb Lomavita leads the team in hitting in both scenarios - hitting .344 overall and .380 on the road.
  • On the mound, the Bears have a staff ERA of 4.94 -which ranks fifth in the Pac-12. During Cal's winning streak, the Bears' staff boasts an ERA of 4.46 and is holding opponents to a .228 average.
  • Junior first baseman Peyton Schulze hit his 15th double on Tuesday - he is five shy of cracking Cal's top-10 for doubles in a season. His 15 doubles are second most in the Pac-12 and 43rd-most in the nation. He is averaging 0.38 doubles per game, which is fourth-best in the Pac-12.
  • This weekend features two of the top catching prospects in this upcoming MLB First Year Player Draft in Cal's Caleb Lomavita and Stanford's Malcolm Moore. In the latest MLB ranking, Lomavita is rated as the 14th top prospect overall and top catching prospect. Moore is the 32nd-ranked prospect and third-rated catcher.
  • Freshman infielders PJ Moutzouridis and Jarren Advincula are primed to join elite company. With 49 and 50 hits through 39 games, respectively, each is on pace to crack the top-10 for most hits in a freshman season in Cal history. Xavier Nady is the record holder with 91, followed by Tony Renda (81). Caleb Lomavita had 63 as a freshman which ranks eighth all-time. Andrew Vaughn ranks fourth all-time with 76 hits in 2017. Tied for ninth all-time is Lance Blakenship and Jeff Kobernus, who had 60 each.
  •  Advincula has struck out just 12 times this season and has gone five games without a strikeout. Advincula leads the Pac-12 and is 22nd in the nation as the toughest player to strikeout, doing so only every 12.4 at bats.

 
SERIES HISTORY 

  • The series between the Bears and Cardinal dates back to the very beginning of the baseball program. Reliable records date back to 1959, with Stanford owning a 219-114-1 record. In the Mike Neu era, Cal is 7-15 against Stanford.
    • Earlier this year, Cal shut out the Cardinal 5-0 at Stu Gordon Stadium on Mar. 5. Luke Short tossed a gem, allowing two hits and three walks over 6.0 innings for the win. Advincula drove in three.
