Stanford Drops Heartbreaker
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - No. 19 Stanford fell in overtime in a heartbreaking loss to No. 13 Stony Brook on Thursday afternoon, 11-10. The defeat was Stanford's fourth loss of the season and just the fifth time the Cardinal has allowed 10 or more goals.
Stanford moves to 10-4 on the season.
The game was a back and forth affair from the jump as the two top-20 teams traded blows throughout the contest. Stony Brook jumped in front first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
Rylee Bouvier scored the first of four straight goals for Stanford, followed by strikes from Jordyn Case, Katy Gilbert, and Jay Browne to push the Cardinal to a 4-2 lead. The Seawolves swung back, however, and the game entered the halftime break at 6-4 in favor of the hosts.
The Cardinal outscored Stony Brook 3-2 in the third period with goals from Ailish Kelly, Aliya Polisky and a second for Browne to bring the game within one. Stanford then jumped ahead by two in the fourth, thanks to three straight goals to open the quarter from Kelly, Polisky, and Sarah Jaques.
Stony Brook was able to answer, however, tying the game with 4:56 left in the game.
The Seawolves had a chance to win the game with the clock winding down, until Ailish Kelly forced a turnover with 12 seconds left and Olivia Rose collected the ground ball to send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Stony Brook was able to take possession off a Stanford turnover and scored the winning goal.
Lucy Pearson was a force in goal for Stanford all game long, making 12 saves on the day and earning a save percentage of .522. One of her saves came late in the fourth quarter, stopping a Stony Brook free position attempt that would have given the Seawolves the lead.
Aliya Polisky led the way in points for Stanford, scoring her 39th and 40th goals of the season while also dishing two assists for four points. Jordyn Case had three, coming from a goal and two assists.
Ailish Kelly and Case shared the lead for shots, each taking five. Kelly also chipped in two caused turnovers, collected two ground balls, and a draw control.
Madison McPherson led Stanford in draw controls, earning six controls on the day. The graduate student also collected a team high three ground balls and caused one turnover.
Stanford now shifts its focus to the regular season finale on Saturday against California at Cagan Stadium at 7 p.m. Following the game against California, Stanford will head to Los Angeles as the No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament.
