Bears Primed For 129th Big Meet

Apr 29, 2024
Cal's women are currently ranked No. 20 in the nation and have won each of the past three Big Meets.

BERKELEY – California track & field will close out its record-setting regular season on Tuesday with its first and only dual meet of the year, traveling down to The Farm for the 129th Big Meet against rival Stanford at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The Golden Bears have swept the Cardinal in each of the past two iterations of the meet and will look to three-peat for the first time since 1994-96.

Cal's men lead the series 73-53-2, while Stanford's women currently have the all-time advantage at 54-28.  Four meet records were broken in both 2022 and 2023, with the Bears being responsible for five of those. The 2023 contest was decided by a margin of 99-64 for the men and 87-76 for the women; the former was Cal's most dominant victory since 2015.

Stanford has dominated this year in the distances, with four top-25 squads in those events alone; they also rank among the nation's best in the women's long jump (No. 4) and women's 400m (No. 16). The Cardinal also fields four athletes that rank in the all-conditions top 25; two-time 2023 national champion Ky Robinson leads the men, while the women have 2024 800m indoor champion Juliette Whittaker, 2023 800m indoor champion Roisin Willis and Pac-12 cross country champion Amy Bunnage.

Cal's women rank 20th in the national U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) poll, while the men are listed as the No. 3 team in the West Region. The Bears have a total of 13 top-25 event squads, chief among them being the No. 3 men's and women's hammer units. Cal is set to enter 12 top-25 athletes – six men, six women – in Tuesday's meet, with two of those (NCAA leader Rowan Hamilton and Ivar Moisander) slated to compete in the day's very first event, men's hammer throw. Six Bears hold the distinction of a top-10 all-conditions national ranking: Hamilton; discus throwers Caisa-Marie Lindfors and Jasmine Blair; pole vaulters Amari Turner and Skyler Magula; and sprinter David Foster. Apart from Blair at No. 2, all of them have set at least one school record this season.
