Big Meet, Big Win

Apr 30, 2024

STANFORD, Calif. – Stanford earned a split in the 129th renewal of the track and field dual against Cal on Tuesday, with the Cardinal women earning their first victory in the series since 2019.

Behind triple winners Juliette Whittaker and Cydney Wright, and Tess Stapleton won two and was second in another to highlight Stanford's 90-72 victory over Cal at Cobb Track and Angell Field.
The Cardinal men lost 114-48 to the Golden Bears, who took a 74-53-2 series lead.

Stanford fell behind quickly in the women's competition, but picked up momentum when Stapleton unleashed a lifetime best 20-7 ¼ (6.28 meters) on her fifth attempt. That jump propelled Stapleton to victory and led a Stanford sweep that cut the deficit to 20-15 after four events.

Cardinal relays provided the alpha and omega to the team's victory. The Stanford team of Stapleton, Wright, Teagan Zwaanstra, and Alyssa Jones won the 4x100 in 44.38. Jones took the baton behind by a couple of strides, but ran down Cal's anchor to earn the victory that tied the score, 20-20.

In the 4x400, Stanford put the exclamation point on its triumph by controlling the race from the outset and getting not just one, but two relay teams ahead of Cal. Samantha Thomas, Roisin Willis, Maya Valmon, and Whittaker ran 3:34.66 and provided the lasting impression to Stanford's day.

In between, Wright aced the 100 and 200, the former in a personal best 11.47 and the latter in a fast, though wind-aided, 23.20. And Whittaker won both middle distance races – the 1,500 in 4:18.29 and the 800 in 2:03.72.

Stanford won all but one running event and outscored the Bears, 64-8, in races 200 meters and longer, including relays.

Stanford took the lead for good in the ninth event, when Willis and Valmon dueled each other to the finish line of the 400, with Willis winning in 53.55 and Valmon next in 53.61. That gave the Cardinal a 40-36 lead.

Freshman Abbey Moody's second place in the javelin, with a season-best 159-0 (48.47m), clinched the team victory for Stanford with only the 4x400 to go.

For the Cardinal men, Sam Liokumovich popped a big personal best of 61-3 (18.67m) to win the shot put. The distance moved him from No. 7 to No. 3 in school history. It was among the highlights of the meet for Stanford, which trailed from the first event, when Cal swept the hammer.

Stanford won four events overall, with Kevin Yang providing an all-conditions lifetime-best triple jump of 51-8 ¼ (15.75m), aided by a 3.6 meters per second wind, which was over the allowable 2.0 for record purposes.

Ky Robinson was pushed to victory in the 1,500, running 3:43.48, and Callum Sherry won the 3,000 steeplechase in a PB of 9:17.46.

Stanford, done with its home season, next competes at the final Pac-12 Championships, May 10-12 in Boulder, Colorado.
