Stromsborg Dominant in USC Baseball's 5-1 Win Over Cal

May 3, 2024

IRVINE, Calif. – The USC baseball team took the series opener against Cal on Friday night at Great Park, getting seven scoreless innings from Tyler Stromsborg in a 5-1 victory over the Golden Bears.

Cal didn't score until the ninth inning and was never able to mount a rally against Stromsborg or reliever Xavier Martinez. USC moves to 22-23 overall with the win and 12-9 in Pac-12 play. The Golden Bears fall to 26-17 overall and 12-13 in conference action.

The Trojans got on the board first when Ryan Jackson doubled to lead off the first and Kevin Takeuchi brought him home with a sac fly. Jacob Galloway made it 2-0 Trojans with a solo-shot in the fourth. Jackson doubled home a run in the fifth and later scored on a sac fly by Galloway. A Carson Wells RBI single in the sixth capped the scoring for USC.

Stromsborg allowed just three hits and no walks in his 7.0 innings pitched. He stranded runners on the corners in the third inning and after that did not allow a runner past first base. Martinez threw a scoreless eighth inning in relief and then gave up a solo-homer in the ninth, but got a popup and strikeout to end the game.
